Westwood : ‘Demystifying’ Judges

Share

A group of Superior and Municipal Court judges will hold a public forum Tuesday aimed at “demystifying” the role of judges and the judicial process.

The program, mainly a question-and-answer session, is one of a series of town meetings to be held throughout the state during “Meet Your Judges Week,” so designated by Gov. George Deukmejian.

Sponsored by the California Judges Assn. and a number of bar associations, the forums represent the first widespread effort by the judiciary to reach out to the public to explain the workings of judges and the court system.

The forums are the brainchild of Sacramento Municipal Judge Barry Loncke, who organized a prototype in 1988. Other pilot programs followed, leading to the statewide effort, endorsed by Deukmejian, state Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp and state Supreme Court Chief Justice Malcolm Lucas.

The forum will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Wadsworth Theater-UCLA. The theater is located on the Veterans Administration property, at San Vicente and Wilshire boulevards.

The moderator will be the one judge everyone already knows: “People’s Court” Judge Joseph Wapner.
