DIGEST : Arlotto Named to All-CCAA First Team

Junior Julie Arlotto, who ranks fourth on the all-time Cal State Northridge scoring list, and senior Denna Mulverhill, also of CSUN, have been named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball team in a vote among coaches.

Arlotto, who averaged 12.7 points and 5.4 rebounds a game during the regular season, was a first-team selection. Mulverhill (10.0, 7.3) was named to the second team.

Northridge senior Derrick Gathers and sophomore Kendell McDaniels received honorable mention on the All-CCAA men’s team.

Gathers, a second-team selection last season, was the Matadors’ leading scorer (17.6) and rebounder (7.1). McDaniels averaged 11.0 points and 6.4 rebounds.

LaVar Ball of Cal State Los Angeles, a former standout at Canoga Park High, was named to the first team. Ball averaged 16.0 points and 9.0 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, who qualified for the CCAA tournament.

Tressie Millender, a 5-foot-10 sophomore forward for College of the Canyons, was the unanimous choice as Western State Conference Player of the Year in a vote by conference coaches.

Millender was the leading scorer in the conference with an 18.7 average and she grabbed 8.7 rebounds per game. Millender, the first Canyons woman selected for the honor, was joined on the six-player Southern Division first team by fellow forward and teammate Dawn Coleman.

Valley Coach Doug Michelson was named coach of the year after leading the Lady Monarchs to the conference title.

Other Valley-area first-team selections included Debra Rabin and Cindy Wiley of Moorpark in the Northern Division and Sandrine Rocher of Valley in the Southern Division.

Selected to the 10-player second team, which included players from both divisions, were Angie Long of Moorpark, Keira Irwin of Canyons and Christine Rumfola, Claudia Rocha and Sylvia Castaneda of Valley.

Oslo Turnforening, a gymnastics team from Norway featuring members of both the men’s and women’s national team, will compete against GYMNASTICS OLYMPICA in an international tournament tonight at GYMNASTICS OLYMPICA in Van Nuys.

Charles Lakes, the top performer on the 1988 U. S. Olympic team also will compete.

The women will compete at 3 p.m., the men at 7:30.

Cost of the event is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children under 12.

The Ventura County chapter of the International Assn. for Financial Planning will be the host for “An Evening with John Wooden,” the former UCLA basketball coach, on Wednesday at the Westlake Hyatt Hotel in Westlake Village from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. A reception will follow. Admission is $10.

Sign-ups for American Roundball Corp. youth basketball for grades 8-12 will be held at two Valley-area sites on March 11 and March 18. Sign-ups at North Hollywood High are at 11 a.m. for varsity players and 1 p.m. for junior varsity players. Sign-ups at Camarillo High are at 5 p.m. for varsity and 7 p.m. for junior varsity.
