Missouri Coach Norm Stewart had trouble explaining the third-ranked Tigers’ 98-67 loss to unranked Notre Dame Saturday at South Bend, Ind.

“We just weren’t very good today, and I’d have a tough time explaining that, so I won’t,” Stewart said.

Jim Horton, one of the five Missouri reserves who started the second half, didn’t have a problem explaining what happened.

“Old fashioned butt-kicking, that’s what it was,” he said.

Monty Williams led a balanced attack with 14 points as Notre Dame probably moved back into the NCAA tournament picture with its victory over the Big Eight Conference champions.

The Irish, forcing numerous turnovers, took a 13-point halftime lead, holding Missouri to 40% shooting. They expanded the margin to 29 points with a 20-4 run that closed with a LaPhonso Ellis steal and basket and two free throws by Ellis after another Notre Dame steal. Much of it came against Missouri reserves who started the second half.

The Irish (15-11) went on to outscore the Tigers, 52-34, in the second half as they revived the NCAA tournament hopes that were damaged by three consecutive losses after a victory two weeks ago against then fourth-ranked Syracuse.

Missouri (26-4) had 12 second-half turnovers. The score was 46-33 at halftime and 73-51 midway through the second half, Notre Dame’s lead peaking at 91-58.

Connecticut (25-5, 12-4) will share the conference’s regular-season title with the winner of seventh-ranked Georgetown’s game today at 10th-ranked Syracuse. Boston College finished its regular season at 8-19. Its 1-15 conference record is the worst in its history.

Davis, who scored 27 points, led the way as Oklahoma seized control with the 27-2 run during an eight-minute span. That spurt, during which Oklahoma State (15-12, 6-8) scored on only one of 14 possessions, gave the Sooners a 78-52 lead with 11:16 remaining.

No. 11 Georgia Tech 85, No. 20 Clemson 69--Brian Oliver scored 34 points, Dennis Scott had 25 and Kenny Anderson added 21 to help the Yellow Jackets end the Tigers’ eight-game winning streak in the Atlantic Coast Conference game at Atlanta.

The loss by Clemson left the door open for Duke to climb into a first-place tie with the Tigers in the final ACC regular-season standings if the Blue Devils beat North Carolina today.

Tech (21-6, 8-6) never trailed after Oliver converted a three-point play with 13:53 left in the first half, overcoming a 17-15 deficit. Tech built a 51-34 lead shortly after halftime, but Clemson (23-6, 10-4) used an 18-2 run to pull to 53-52 with 11:44 remaining.

After taking a 33-21 halftime lead, La Salle (27-1) scored eight of the first 10 points in the second half. Jack Hurd’s layup was followed by a Doug Overton steal and dunk and put the Explorers ahead, 41-23, with 17:13 to play.

Fairfield (10-19) never got closer than 10 in the second half.

No. 14 Michigan State 75, No. 17 Minnesota 73--Steve Smith’s jumper with 29 seconds left in overtime at Minneapolis capped a 39-point performance and gave the Spartans a one-game lead in the Big Ten with their 10th consecutive victory.

The Spartans (24-5, 13-3) have games remaining at Northwestern and against Purdue, which takes a 12-4 conference record into today’s game against Michigan.

Michigan State’s winning streak is its longest since 1978-79, when Magic Johnson led the Spartans to the national championship and their last Big Ten title.

In losing for only the third time in its last 30 games at Williams Arena, Minnesota (20-7, 11-6) was eliminated from the Big Ten race.
