GIRLS’ BASKETBALL DIVISION II : Point Loma Rips San Pasqual in Half

Not one to include much scoring in her part of the dialogue, Stacy Wainwright needs to be coaxed into taking more than a token number of shots.

But with her Point Loma team carrying a slim, 26-21 lead into the third quarter of the San Diego Section Division II girls’ basketball championship Saturday afternoon at Golden Hall, the pass-happy guard was persuaded to reconsider by Coach Lee Trepanier.

Wainwright ignited the Pointers into a second-half frenzy in which they outscored San Pasqual, 36-13, and rolled to an easy, 62-34 victory.

It was Point Loma’s second consecutive section title--it was Division I champion last year--and sixth in the past seven years. In 1988, Point Loma (27-3) was dismissed in the semifinals by this year’s Division I champion, Mt. Carmel.

“They never get boring,” said Trepanier, who had driven to Los Angeles the previous night to scout possible opponents for the Southern California Regionals, which begin Tuesday.

San Pasqual (24-5) suffered its first loss of 1990, and it was a troublesome one. Coach Terri Bamford isn’t convinced her team even showed up.

“I’ve never seem them play like that,” Bamford said. “It was like they didn’t even want to touch the ball.”

San Pasqual’s Nikki Gannon, who had to rush off to the girls’ 2-A soccer final at Torrey Pines, agreed.

“We came out really scared,” said Gannon, who led San Pasqual with 11 points. “I don’t know why. We beat them before (53-52 in overtime at San Pasqual on Jan. 2). We just got overpowered inside.”

Tyeast Brown (23 points) and Ericka Crittenden (11) scored from inside, and inside alone.

But Wainwright was a force, if a somewhat reluctant one, on the outside. She was the game’s second-leading scorer with 13 points.

“I’m used to passing in to (Brown and Crittenden),” said Wainwright, a junior. “I don’t like to shoot until I get yelled at.”

Trepanier convinced Wainwright that because San Pasqual put the pinch on Brown on the inside, she would be more effective from the outside.

During a 12-0 Point Loma tear in the third, Wainwright scored three times from the 10- to 12-foot range. She also scored on a fast-break layup later the quarter.

When things began to take on a worst-case scenario for San Pasqual, along came the fourth quarter. Valerie Ryan scored from the low post in the first few seconds; the Golden Eagles then weren’t heard from for another 5 1/2 minutes.

Bamford said play on the inside was rough and tough.

“It’s hard when you’re taking the ball to the hole and getting hammered,” Bamford said. “It’s frustrating.”

Despite the lopsided score, Trepanier waited until there were just four seconds left to pull his starters and send in the bench players.

“My job is to coach,” Trepanier said. “I’m getting ready for the state championship.”
