THE SIDELINES : Gartner Traded to N.Y. Rangers
The New York Rangers acquired right wing Mike Gartner from the Minnesota North Stars today for right wing Ulf Dahlen and a fourth-round draft pick.
The 30-year-old Gartner is Minnesota’s second-leading scorer with 34 goals and 36 assists. In 11 NHL seasons with Washington and the North Stars, Gartner has 438 goals, 23rd on the all-time list, and 335 assists. He was traded by the Capitals on March 7, 1989, along with defenseman Larry Murphy for right wing Dino Ciccarelli and defenseman Bob Rouse.
The 23-year-old Dahlen has 18 goals--13 on the power play--and 18 assists. Dahlen, the Rangers first-round draft pick in 1985 and the seventh choice overall in the NHL draft, has 71 goals and 60 assists in 188 NHL games.
