Boston’s Bob Gould received word before Tuesday night’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers that he had been named temporary captain of the Bruins until Ray Bourque returns from an injury.

Gould then went out and played the leadership role to the hilt, scoring the game-winning goal with 41 seconds left as the Bruins defeated the Flyers, 2-1, at Philadelphia.

Gould tapped in Dave Christian’s shot past goalie Ken Wregget in the crease after Christian stole the puck from defenseman Terry Carkner at the blue line. His goal gave the Bruins a three-game sweep in their season series with the Flyers.

“It’s a pat on the back,” Gould said of his captaincy. “It’s appreciation of a lot of hard work. It came totally unexpected. It’s a game that I will remember for a long time.”

The defeat tied the Flyers’ club record of 16 home losses set in the 1968-69 season. The Flyers, last in the Patrick Division, are 14-16-2 at home this season.

The Bruins, who hold the league’s best record at 42-22-5, improved their league-leading road record to 21-12-3. The Bruins are 8-1-0 in their last nine games.

New Jersey 2, St. Louis 1--John MacLean and Doug Brown scored second-period goals and Chris Terreri stopped 16 shots at East Rutherford, N.J., as the Devils ended the Blues’ three-game winning streak.

The victory was only the Devils’ third in 12 games and came at the start of a crucial three-game homestand that could determine whether New Jersey stays alive in the Patrick Division playoff race.

The Devils’ victory moved them into a third-place tie in the tight Patrick Division with 64 points.

Hartford 4, New York Islanders 2--Kevin Dineen scored three goals at Uniondale, N.Y., as the Whalers won their fourth consecutive game.

Hartford’s Peter Sidorkiewicz made 23 saves. He has won all four career decisions against the Islanders, giving up only seven goals.

Buffalo 1, Washington 1--Pierre Turgeon scored a power-play goal at 6:46 of the third period to give the Sabres the tie at Landover, Md.

The Capitals are fighting for a playoff spot in the Patrick Division and trail New Jersey and the New York Islanders, tied for third, by one point.

Edmonton 4, Pittsburgh 3--Craig MacTavish scored his 20th goal of the season at the 1:17 mark of overtime to give the Oilers the victory at Edmonton.

Mark Messier picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and broke into the Penguins zone with Jeff Beukeboom and MacTavish.

Messier passed to MacTavish, who lifted a shot high over goaltender Frank Pietrangelo for the winning goal.
