WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The University of San Diego’s Candida Echeverria and Chris Enger were selected by conference coaches to the All-West Coast Conference women’s basketball team. Enger, from Vista High School, was also selected the Freshman of the Year.

Echeverria, a guard, was selected to the 10-member team for the second year in a row. She finished her career as the Toreras’ all-time leading scorer (1,211 points) and free throw shooter (326) and third in rebounding (528).

Enger, a two-time San Diego Section player of the year, was the only freshman named to the first team. She set USD and WCC records for rebounds in a game (24), blocked shots in a game (12) and blocked shots in a season (96), which ranks sixth in the country.

Lynda Jones, a sophomore forward from Mt. Carmel High, was honorable mention.

MEN’S TENNIS

Jose Luis Noriega defeated Tole Marinkovic, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles putting the University of San Diego on its way to a 6-3 victory over San Diego State.

SOFTBALL

Malia Ouzts, who was on third base, scored on a balk caused by catcher Sue Campbell, when she prematurely stepped out of the catcher’s box during an intentional walk, in the top of the 13th as Cal State Fullerton defeated host San Diego State, 1-0, in Big West Conference game.

BASEBALL

Point Loma Nazarene (7-5-1) split a nonconference doubleheader with Redlands. PLNC won the second game, 14-3. Chris Gunnett (2-0) was the winning pitcher and went two for three with three runs batted in. Redlands (5-5) won the first game, 5-3.

WOMEN’S GOLF

U.S. International finished fourth in the 18-team Utah-Dixie Tournament hosted by Brigham Young, which won the tournament.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

No. 8 San Diego State lost a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match to No. 3 Long Beach State, 12-15, 15-9, 15-9, 7-15, 15-12, at Peterson Gym. Eric Etebari had 22 kills for No. 8 SDSU (11-9, 3-7). Long Beach State improved to 14-3, 6-1.
