Oaklawn Park Jockey Rides 5 Winners in Day
Sacra Hoxen gave jockey Don Howard his fifth winner of the afternoon when he overtook Fighting Brother in mid-stretch for a 2 1/2-length victory in Tuesday’s $21,000 allowance feature at Oaklawn Park.
Sacra Hoxen paid $10.60, $5.80 and $3.20 after going the six furlongs in 1:11 25. Fighting Brother, with Sam Maple in the saddle, finished three lengths in front of Unloved and returned $4.20 and $3. Unloved, guided by John Lively, was worth $4.80.
Sacra Hoxen increased his earnings to $43,403 for owners Alyce and Joe Novogratz, who purchased the 3-year-old son of Fit to Fight for $28,000 in 1988. The Glenn Wismer trainee has posted three wins and two thirds from 13 career starts.
The exacta combination of Nos. 6 and 4 returned $33.80.
Howard also reached the winner’s circle with Squaw Ridge in the first, Midnight Dollars in the fifth, Daffodil Bed in the sixth and Flathorn in the seventh.
A Classix carry-over pool of $33,928 resulted when no one in the crowd of 7,699 correctly selected the winners of the third through eighth races. A consolation payoff of $6,700.60 each went to one ticket with five winners. The correct numbers were 12-4-12-4-2-3.
Total wagering on the 10-race program by a crowd of 7,699 was $1,241,472.
A season-high payoff of $244.40 for a $2 win ticket was produced when Shamless upset a field of 12 in the third race. The payoff is also the largest in the last 10 Oaklawn seasons and is believed to be the largest since Phaltup paid $350.80 to win on March 7, 1950.
