SDSU Women Eliminated by San Jose State

San Diego State was routed by San Jose State, 81-59, Wednesday in the first round of the Big West Conference women’s basketball tournament in Long Beach.

The Aztecs, under first-year coach Beth Burns, finished the season 7-23. San Jose State, which had lost both games to SDSU during the regular season, improved to 5-23 and will play No. 1-seeded Nevada Las Vegas in a quarterfinal game tonight.

Julie Evans, who earlier in the day was selected to the All-Big West Conference first team, had a team-high 16 points for the Aztecs, but the senior guard from Hilltop High made just seven of 25 shots.

Melanie Usher added 14 points and Lori Lollis, who was named to the conference’s all-freshman team, had 12.

San Jose State was led by Hulett Brooks with 22 points and Lora Alexander with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

BASEBALL

San Diego State (12-6) eased past UC San Diego, 12-3, behind the hitting of Brian Grebeck and Brad Genarro. Grebeck went two for five with four RBIs and scored twice. Genarro came through with a bases-empty home run. For UCSD (4-7), Henry Jimenez went three for three with a home run and scored twice.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Ball State defeated UC San Diego, 15-4, 15-12, 16-14 at UCSD. Nate Brown had 24 kills for UCSD (0-14) and teammate Tom McCutchen added 15.

SOFTBALL

UCSD’s women’s softball team played longball for the first time at its North Campus Recreation Facility and swept a doubleheader from Regis (Colo.) College.

UCSD (4-6) won the first game, 4-1, and the second, 6-1.

The Tritons’ Tracey Kehr hit the school’s first over-the-fence home run at the two-year-old facility. The two-out, fourth-inning hit in the second game cleared the 190 feet down the left field line with 10 feet to spare, Coach Sal Coats said.

Kim Stutzman improved to 3-0, finishing with three strikeouts and a six-hitter. Kathy Fogg and Lisa Mora each had three hits.

In the first game, Fogg won her first game in four decisions, limiting Regis to five hits, striking out six and walking three. She, Dana Chaiken, and Kehr had two hits apiece, and Kehr had two RBIs.

Regis is 3-7.

HOCKEY

The Lytes Rustlers, a West Coast-based team in the North American Junior Hockey League, will play two games against the St. Louis Jr. Blues Saturday and Sunday at the San Diego Ice Arena on Black Mountain Road in Mira Mesa.

Three Rustler players are from the San Diego area: defenseman Matthew Clark of Poway, forward Glen Easter of Poway and forward Joey LaDuca of San Diego.
