THE DEATH OF HANK GATHERS : Gathers Touched Those Who Knew Him
While trying to understand the tragic loss of a promising young athlete such as Hank Gathers, I was moved and inspired by the two cover photos on the sports section related to the story: one of an opponent holding Gathers’ hand while trying to comfort/assist him and the second of a white friend consoling Lucille Gathers while grieving the loss himself.
Could it be that competition and racism are becoming less a part of society as we strive to become better human beings? I’d like to think so. God bless the Gathers family.
