BIG WEST CONFERENCE WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT : Lee’s 27 Points, 20 Rebounds Lead Long Beach

Angelique Lee scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed a tournament-record 20 rebounds to lead 14th-ranked Cal State Long Beach to an 89-59 victory in the quarterfinal round of the Big West Conference women’s basketball tournament Thursday at the Long Beach Arena.

The victory earned the 49ers a Saturday semifinal date with Pacific, a 68-63 upset winner over Hawaii.

Long Beach led, 19-15, with 8:39 to play in the first half and went on an 18-3 run. Dana Wilkerson scored seven of the 49ers’ 18 points.

The previous record for rebounding in a tournament game was 18, shared by Pauline Jordan of Nevada Las Vegas and Geanine Hobbs of UC Irvine.

Fresno State 72, Cal State Fullerton 60--The Bulldogs played a collapsing defense on Genia Miller, Fullerton’s 6-foot-3 center, holding her to two points in the first half and 15 in the game.

Miller, who was averaging 24 points, took only three shots in the first half as Fresno State jumped to leads of 17-2 and 27-8.

Stacey Cornaggia scored 18 points for the Bulldogs and Geri Gainey added 14. Simone Srubek, a 6-6 center, and Yannick Souvre each added 12 for Fresno State (19-10), which advanced to a semifinal game Saturday against Nevada Las Vegas.

Fullerton forward Kathy Werth scored 27, taking advantage of the double-team on Miller.

UNLV 102, San Jose St. 67--Mandy Hannah scored 19 points and Janice Holliday added 19 to lead the Rebels.

Las Vegas made 41 of 66 field-goal attempts (62.1%). San Jose made only 24 of 63 (38.1%).

The Rebels (26-2) led at halftime, 51-32.

Lora Alexander led San Jose (5-24) with 17 points.

For Las Vegas, Pauline Jordan had 16 points and Geannine Jordan 14.

Pacific 68, Hawaii 63--Natasha Norris scored 17 points, leading five players in double figures, as the Tigers upset the 12th-ranked Wahines, who finished with a 25-3 record.

Ayesha Brooks scored 26 points for Hawaii, but Judy Mosely was held to 12 points, well below her 26-point average.

Pacific (15-14) won only six games last season and had never won a Big West tournament game before defeating UC Irvine in the first round.
