PREP ROUNDUP : Donnelly Leads Foothill With His Bat and Arm

Kent Donnelly led Foothill High School to a 15-2 victory over Tustin in a championship semifinal of the Newport-Tustin baseball tournament Friday.

Donnelly hit a two-run home run in the third inning to give Foothill a 3-2 lead. Donnelly also pitched five innings and struck out seven.

Foothill will play Mater Dei in the final at 2 p.m. today at Tustin High School.

In the other championship semifinal, Lionel Hastings had two hits and three RBIs to lead Mater Dei to a 4-1 victory. Hastings’ bases-loaded single in the fourth scored two runs.

Sean Sutton (1-1) went five innings, allowed both hits, struck out four, walked four and allowed Mission Viejo’s unearned run. Hastings relieved him, retiring all six batters he faced.

In the consolation semifinals:

Estancia 15, Newport Harbor 5--Ruben Mora went four for four, had two doubles, a home run, scored three runs and had six RBIs to lead Estancia (2-1). Mora led Estancia’s 11-run, eight-hit second inning by hitting an RBI double and a three-run home run. Newport Harbor is 2-2. Also for Estancia, Dan Ucker had two hits and three RBIs and Greg Brannis got his first victory.

Capistrano Valley 7, Esperanza 6 (8 innings)--John Mackay hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning for Capistrano Valley (3-2) at Corona del Mar. The Cougars scored the tying run in the seventh when Tony Solliday scored from second on an error. Solliday hit a two run home run in the fourth inning.

In other Newport-Tustin tournament games:

Saddleback 2, Santa Ana Valley 0--Ramiro Gracia singled, tripled, scored and had an RBI to lead Saddleback (4-1) at Foothill.

Orange 3, Corona del Mar 1--Trailing 1-0, host Orange rallied to win a consolation game with a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Jason Smith and two in the fourth on a double by Chris Thompson.

Josh Belovsky (1-0) allowed a run on two hits in five innings for Orange (1-4).

Santa Ana 7, Costa Mesa 3--Jesse Rosas (2-0) struck out six in four innings and David Fausto struck out six in three innings of relief for Santa Ana in a consolation game. Rosas had two hits, including a triple, drove in a run and scored a run. Santa Ana is 2-1.

In the El Segundo baseball tournament:

Westminster 5, South Torrance 3--Mark Murphy (1-0) allowed four hits and no earned runs in a consolation semifinal. Dennis Barclay had two hits and an RBI for Westminster (2-2), which scored four runs in the third inning on a walk, three consecutive singles and an error.

Gahr 3, Brea-Olinda 2--Host Gahr scored three runs in the first inning and Brea-Olinda scored one in each of the first two innings in a consolation game.

In the Oceanside baseball tournament:

Laguna Beach 10, Oceanside 1--Eric Snip went four for four, including a solo home run, for visiting Laguna Beach (1-5).

In nonleague baseball games:

Trabuco Hills 10, Pioneer 2--Steve Height had two hits and three RBIs and pitched six innings, allowing four hits, and Ryan Meredith hit a home run for visiting Trabuco Hills. (2-0).

Capistrano Valley Christian 19, Army-Navy Academy 1--Aaron Martin and Kevin Biniasz each homered as host Capistrano Valley Christian scored six in the third inning. Biniasz (2-0) struck out nine and Brad Wilson hit a three-run home run for Capistrano Valley Christian (3-0).

In the championship of the Chino softball tournament:

Don Lugo 1, Foothill 0--Don Lugo scored in the first on a double and a single, two of its five hits off Foothill pitcher Leeann Gonzalez. Gonzalez struck out eight.

In the Corona softball tournament:

El Toro 2, Corona 1--T.J. Stoewsand singled home Karen Clair in the bottom of the seventh inning for El Toro in a semifinal game. Jennifer Lourden pitched a two-hitter.

Irvine 4, Norco 1--Jennifer Brundage (3-1) pitched a three-hitter, struck out 16 and went three for four, scored two runs and had an RBI for Irvine.

In nonleague softball:

Whittier Christian 13, Keppel 8--Cristen Crigler tripled with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to give visiting Whittier Christian a 9-4 lead. Isela Duque hit her second home run of the season for Whittier Christian (3-2).

Garden Grove Claremont 28, Riverside Van Horn 0--Amy Miller went five for seven, scored four runs and drove in six for visiting Claremont, which scored 16 runs in the second inning.

Rancho Alamitos 8, Loara 1--Chrystal Youngberg, Theresa Agpalsa and Destiny Mollison each had two hits and scored a run for host Rancho Alamitos (2-1), which scored seven runs in the third inning.

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Valencia 13, Western 5--Danny Yu won his sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, and the doubles team of Jason Bae and Chris Seki won 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, for host Valencia (2-1, 1-0).

In Pacific Coast League boys’ volleyball:

Trabuco Hills 3, Costa Mesa 1--Greg Stone had 20 kills and setter Brandon Workman had 37 assists as visiting Trabuco Hills (4-1, 1-0) won, 15-6, 15-5, 14-16, 15-5.
