COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Berger’s Hitting Sparks UC Irvine to 14-1 Victory Over Wyoming

Jon Berger hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning as UC Irvine defeated Wyoming, 14-1, in a nonconference baseball game Monday in Irvine.

Berger had three hits and four runs batted in for Irvine (15-8), which has won 12 of its last 14 games. The Anteaters scored five runs in the first inning.

Ed Luna went three for five and drove in a run and Billy Bardens, who had two hits and three RBIs, has a hit in each of the Anteaters’ last 11 games.

Chris Huber (3-0) allowed three hits and struck out seven to earn the victory. Wyoming is 7-7.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, Kansas 1--The host Anteaters, ranked ninth in the nation, won five of six singles matches and doubles matches weren’t played. Irvine’s Trevor Kronemann, ranked No. 25 nationally, defeated No. 35 John Falbo, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, in No. 1 singles. Irvine improved to 9-5; Kansas dropped to 5-7.

In nonconference softball:

Christ College Irvine 15-15, U.S. Coast Guard Academy 0-0--Michelle Vail pitched a no-hitter and struck out nine in the first game of doubleheader for host Christ College (12-7).

Kathy Carroll went six for nine with two RBIs and De Brunk was five for eight with seven RBIs for Chris College.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, George Mason 0--Scott Recknor had 17 kills and 14 digs as host Irvine (5-10) won, 15-8, 15-9, 15-10.
