PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Smith Is Pitcher Perfect for Garden Grove

Stephanie Smith pitched a five-inning perfect game to lead Garden Grove High School to an 11-0 victory over Westminster Thursday in a second-round game of the Cypress softball tournament at Cypress Park.

Smith struck out 10 of the 15 batters she faced as the game was stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule. Smith also doubled, scored twice and had one run batted in.

Michelle Cash was two for two, walked, and scored three times and Becky Eggert had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice.

In other Cypress tournament games:

Fullerton 7, Anaheim 4--Cheryl Lamka had a double and scored twice and Benna Kennedy had two hits and scored once for Fullerton (4-3).

In the Laguna Hills tournament:

Irvine 2, Foothill 0--Jennifer Brundage (6-1) pitched a no-hitter, striking out 13 and walking three, to lead Irvine (7-1) in the championship semifinals. Brandi Armstrong doubled for Irvine. Foothill is 5-4.

Marina 4, Tustin 0--Janet Miyahara pitched a no-hitter and struck out 12 to lead Marina (4-2) in another semifinal. Two errors prevented a perfect game. Christa Yorke had two hits, including a triple, and one RBI, and Miyahara tripled and had one RBI. Tustin is 3-2.

Capistrano Valley 2, Trabuco Hills 1--Jennifer Smith pitched a two-hitter, struck out 12 and walked one to lead Capistrano Valley (5-1). Smith was two for two with a double.

Mission Viejo 8, Santa Ana 0--Kristin Harrison had two triples and four RBIs to lead Mission Viejo (5-1). Kerin Dull pitched a three-hitter to improve to 5-0.

Dana Hills 10, Costa Mesa 0-- Janae Deffendaugh (1-2) pitched a no-hitter, walked one and struck out one for Dana Hills (2-3).

Los Amigos 8, Laguna Hills 0--Stefani Schaefer hit a two-run home run to lead Los Amigos (1-6). Laguna Hills is 1-5.

In the Canyon tournament:

San Clemente 2, El Modena 0--In round-robin play at Canyon, Tara Roush (5-3) pitched a four-hitter and drove in San Clemente’s (5-4) second run with a single in the sixth inning.

In nonleague girls’ softball:

Santa Margarita 6, Laguna Beach 5--Erika Gambale’s two-out single in the seventh gave host Santa Margarita the victory. The Eagles (4-0) trailed, 6-0, going into the bottom of the sixth, but scored twice in the sixth and four times in the seventh. Michelle Matot tripled home two runs to tie the score, 5-5, and then scored on Gambale’s single.

Esperanza 5, Sunny Hills 1--Kristi Wilson scored three times to lead host Esperanza (4-4). Rachel Veloz had two hits and two RBIs and pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts. She had a no-hitter until the seventh inning.

La Quinta 8, Estancia 2--Jennifer Boston had three hits and an RBI and Robin Weaver had two hits and an RBI for host La Quinta. Jill Bishop (2-0) allowed four hits and had five strikeouts for La Quinta (2-2).
