PREP ROUNDUP : Brundage Pitches Irvine Past Marina for Softball Title
Jennifer Brundage pitched a five-hitter and had four strikeouts as Irvine High School defeated Marina, 1-0, in the championship game of the Laguna Hills softball tournament Friday at Alica Park.
Brundage, a junior, improved to 7-1 and Irvine is 8-1. The Vaqueros’ run came in the third inning when Alleah Poulson reached on an error, advanced to second on a single, reached third on a sacrifice and scored on a passed ball.
In the championship semifinals of the Cypress tournament:
Mater Dei 2, Woodbridge 0--Jennifer Clark pitched a two-hitter for Mater Dei, which plays Cypress at 7 tonight in the championship at Arnold Park.
Cypress 1, Garden Grove 0--Beth Howard (6-1) pitched a five-hitter and Sarah Powers scored in the second inning on a throwing error for the Centurions.
In the Cypress tournament consolation round:
Kennedy 4, Fullerton 0--Cheryl Longeway (3-1) pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk for Kennedy (4-1).
Western 1, Millikan 0--Beth Queypo pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts for Western.
In the 4-A Division games of the Canyon softball tournament at Peralta Park in Anaheim Hills:
La Habra 5, Valencia 3 (8 innings)--Julie Miller’s single drove in two runs and capped a three-run, eighth-inning for La Habra (4-2). Valencia is 6-2.
Rolling Hills 3, La Quinta 0--Rolling Hills scored twice in the first inning in improving to 3-2. Theresa Pinkerton (0-2) took the loss for La Quinta (2-3).
El Toro 6, Hawthorne 1--Paige Lauby (4-0) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 18 without a walk to lead El Toro (8-1) past Hawthorne (6-1). Lauby also went three for three with a triple. Corrie Yauney had a two-run single in the third inning.
In 5-A Division games of the Canyon softball tournament:
Fountain Valley 4, St. Joseph 0--Rae Rice struck out 15 and improved to 2-0. Fountain Valley is 3-2 and St. Joseph falls to 2-2.
Los Alamitos 4, Newbury Park 3--Los Alamitos scored the winning run on a two-out, bases-loaded wild pitch by Newbury Park’s Lea Lopez in the top of the seventh. Julie Harris had three hits for Los Alamitos (5-1). Newbury Park is 3-3.
In Orange League tennis:
Magnolia 10, Savanna 8--David Smithline and Richard Madran swept, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2, to lead visiting Magnolia. Todd Merryman swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for Savanna (1-8, 1-2).
In Sea View League tennis:
University 13, Tustin 5--Steve Tze and Brian Shapiro swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for University (3-1, 1-0).

Irvine 206, Ocean View 218--Scott Auerbach shot a two-under-par 34 to lead Irvine at Mile Square golf course in Fountain Valley.
In Olympic League boys’ volleyball:
Santa Margarita 3, Valley Christian 0--Kevin Rice had nine kills and one block to lead host Santa Margarita (5-1) to a 15-3, 15-8, 15-8 victory. Sean Regan had seven kills for the Eagles.
In nonleague boys’ volleyball:
Foothill 3, Costa Mesa 1--Jeff Janis had 22 kills to lead visiting Foothill to a 15-3, 14-16, 15-8, 15-13 victory at Costa Mesa. Jim Crowell had 42 assists and John Newcombe had 10 kills for Foothill (5-0).
Calvary Chapel 3, Whittier Christian 0--Danny Neuman had 23 kills to lead visiting Calvary Chapel (3-1, 2-0) to a 16-14, 15-8, 15-5 victory. Steve Flores had 15 kills tor Calvary Chapel.
