COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Track Teams Win Four-Way Meets

The UC Irvine men’s and women’s track teams were winners in four-way meets held Saturday at the UC Irvine track stadium.

The Anteater men compiled 73 points to defeat Navy (66), Utah State (58) and Cal State Fullerton (9) in the team competition.

Senior Mike Morales won the hammer throw (207 feet 1 inch) and the shot put (56-1 1/4), and was second in the discus (163-6) for Irvine. Navy’s Bryant Clevenger won the discus with a throw of 167-5.

Sonny Reynolds also won two events for Irvine. He took the 100 meters (10.7 seconds) and the 200 (21.7) and ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x100 relay team.

Also for Irvine, Mike Hewitt won the polo vault (14-5), Matt Farmer won the high jump (6-11), Aaron Mascorro won the 5,000 (14:42.1), and Walter Harris won the 110 high hurdles (14.9).

In the women’s competition, Irvine won with 78 points. Utah State (52) was second, Texas Tech (33) third and Cal State Fullerton (6) fourth.

Leading the Irvine women was Buffy Rabbitt, who won the 5,000 (17:13.8).

Other Anteater winners were Shelly Tochluk in the 400 (57.3), Sabrina Miles in the discus (146-1), Trindl Fearnley in the javelin (132-3), and Desiree Bracey in the 100 (11.8).

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Chapman College 9, Cal State Dominguez Hills 4--Doug Yates’ three-run home run in the seventh inning gave host Chapman an 8-4 lead. Chris Cutliff had two doubles, a triple and a single with two runs batted in for Chapman (13-11, 5-5). Dominguez Hills (10-10, 5-6) took a 3-0 lead at the start, but Chapman went ahead, 5-3, in the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Ken Hokuf (2-0) went seven innings for the victory.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Azusa Pacific 11-9, Southern California College 9-14--Donny Harrell had three hits including a solo home run and drove in three runs for visiting Southern California (12-10, 5-2) in the second game. Kendall Kasper had three hits, including a solo home run, in the second game.

In nonconference baseball:

Cal State Fullerton 7, Wisconsin 2--James Popoff (3-2) pitched a seven-hitter with six strikeouts for host Fullerton (11-9). The Titans had 15 hits, including four by Kevin Farlow. Farlow also had a double and an RBI. Mate Borgogno had three hits, including a double and an RBI for Fullerton.

In nonconference softball:

San Diego State 4-1, Chapman 0-2--Jacki Blake (8-2) pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts for visiting Chapman (20-8) in the second game. Chapman tied the score, 1-1, on an RBI triple by Sandy Olibas in the second inning. Olibas singled in the sixth and later scored the winning run on Rose Conner’s single.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference track championships at UC Santa Barbara:

Sherri Hall of Southern California College won the women’s 10,000 meters in 36:39, breaking the meet record of 42:14 set by Fresno Pacific’s Lisa Bennett in 1988.
