Tim Falsken, a senior infielder and pitcher at Westlake High, has committed orally to attend Cal State Long Beach in the fall. He chose the 49ers over UCLA after visiting both schools.

Falsken, 5-foot-9, 160 pounds, has played a key role in Westlake’s 7-0 start this season, the best in school history. Falsken is batting .476 and has scored 13 runs. In addition, he is 3-0 with an 0.53 earned-run average in 13 1/3 innings.

He is the second Westlake player to commit to a four-year school. Catcher Mike Lieberthal committed to Arizona State last month. The next signing period for high school seniors begins April 11.

Jason Gudzunas of Fullerton Troy High, an All-Freeway League selection last season, has made an oral commitment to play football at Cal State Northridge in the fall.

Gudzunas, 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, was a lineman in Troy’s 5-2 defense but is projected as an outside linebacker at Northridge.

“Speed was (Jason’s) biggest asset,” Troy Coach John Turek said. “He could really run to the football. He was always around the ball.”

Gudzunas had 57 tackles, five sacks and recovered four fumbles last season. He also led Troy’s special teams in tackles.

Matthew Carinio, a senior at Santa Clara High, finished sixth in a field of 54 cyclists this month in the Fountain Grove Circuit Race in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Carinio was one of 13 racers who finished the event.

Jeff and Ernie Thorpe’s J-24, Color Blind, was the overall winner in the spinnaker division of the Ventura Yacht Club’s Frostbite Series that concluded earlier this month in Ventura Harbor.
