The CBS television series “Jake and the Fatman” will pull out of Hawaii and move back to Los Angeles in a move to cut costs, a newspaper reported Thursday.

The Honolulu Advertiser, quoting an unnamed source close to the series, said the series will return to Hawaii for six one-hour episodes, then move back to California.

“There will also be a two-hour show, with plans to do one hour in Hawaii and the other in L.A. to explain the move back to California,” the source told the paper.

Shooting is less expensive in Los Angeles, where much of the work can be done on pre-existing sets, the source told the newspaper.

This is the second series Hawaii has lost this year. “Island Son,” starring Richard Chamberlain, was canceled by CBS.

“Jake and the Fatman” features actors Joe Penny and William Conrad. The newspaper said Penny has favored a return to Los Angeles, while Conrad is an avid fan of Hawaii.

The series is scheduled to complete this season’s 25-show order by April 19.
