P.M. BRIEFING : Pact Near at San Diego Papers
The Union-Tribune Publishing Co. and the bargaining committee of the San Diego Newspaper Guild Local 95 have reached a tentative agreement that could end a bitter two-year dispute.
After the final language is drafted today, the bargaining committee will take the settlement, proposed by a state mediator, to its membership for a ratification vote, tentatively set for April 1.
The settlement would resolve the dispute between the labor union and the Union-Tribune Publishing Co., publishers of the San Diego Union and the San Diego Tribune. The guild represents about 1,100 reporters, photographers and workers in the business, advertising, circulation and other departments at both newspapers.
Guild members have been working without a contract since June, 1988, and have not had a raise in two years. In recent months, guild members threatened to strike and have been involved in informational picketing, a byline strike and a subscription boycott drive.
The tentative agreement includes a two-year contract with a 10% raise the first year and 3% the second year.
