Isler Wins Three Races From Dane

American skipper Peter Isler won all three races in winds of eight to 10 knots against Danish skipper Valdemar Bandolowski in Friday’s Danish/American Challenge in San Diego Harbor.

Three more races will be held today beginning at 12:30 p.m., and the regatta will conclude with two races Sunday.

Isler is ranked No. 1 in the United States, fourth in the world. Bandolowski won Olympics gold medals in 1976 and 1980.

BASKETBALL

Crawford’s Marc Carter, a 6-7 senior, scored a perfect 200 points in the final to win the San Diego County Slam and Jam Contest before 1,800 at Mt. Carmel High School.

Carter edged Mt. Carmel’s Mike Graves and Mira Mesa’s Marc Ziegler, who each had 199 points in the final.

Defending champion Jerome Price of University City finished fourth with 196 points.

WRESTLING

Brian Dolph of Indiana took a 4-2 decision over Cal State Bakersfield’s Rich Bailey, who wrestled at Valhalla High School, in the semifinals of the 150-pound class at the NCAA Wrestling Championships at College Park, MD.

Bailey, seeded third, will meet No. 1 Townsend Saunders of Arizona State in the consolation semifinals.

Bailey defeated Doug Streicher of Iowa, 11-6, in the quarterfinals. Mark Gerardi of Notre Dame and Valhalla, lost to Casey Graham of Indiana, 8-1, and was eliminated from the consolation bracket of the 167-pound class.

BASEBALL

SDSU defeated visiting Utah, 4-3, in a Western Athletic Conference opener.

Kurt Archer (2-1) got the victory for the Aztecs (17-10, 1-0). Utah is 6-13, 0-1.

USD managed just one hit as host Pepperdine pounded the Toreros, 18-0, in a West Coast Conference game.

Pepperdine (17-12-1) had 16 hits. USD is 1-15 and 8-8.

Point Loma Nazarene defeated Northwestern Nazarene College, 8-0, before losing to Occidental, 14-4. West Rekeda (1-0) went the distance for the victory in the first game.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Mike Mattarocci had 15 kills and eight blocks as San Diego State defeated visiting Loyola Marymount, 15-13, 7-15, 15-1, 15-10 in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match.

John Ross had 16 kills and hit .536 for the Aztecs (16-10, 4-8).

SOFTBALL

Tracy Kehr was four for four with three doubles as UC San Diego routed visiting Claremont College, 12-1, in the first game of a doubleheader.

Kathy Fogg went three for three and allowed just three hits as the Tritons (10-8) won the second game, 3-1.

Niki LaRoche was six for seven and drove in five runs as U.S. International won two of three games at the Pony Tournament at Cal Poly Pomona, including a 7-1 victory over No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Nathalie Rodriguez and Michelle Duda rallied to defeat Aby Brayton and Sakolwan Kacharoen, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles and No. 16 South Carolina edged No. 17 USD, 5-4, in a nonconference match at USD.

SDSU defeated Minnesota, 8-1, in a nonconference match at SDSU. Eva Olivarez defeated Jennie Moe, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 singles.

MEN’S TENNIS

SDSU (13-5) defeated Nevada Las Vegas, 5-4, at the UC Irvine Tournament.

Ricardo Herrera led the Aztecs at No. 1 singles, defeating Dorian Geba, 7-6, 7-5. At No. 2 singles, Tole Marinkovic defeated Eric Aanes, 6-4, 6-1.

No. 16 USC (14-4) defeated USD, 6-1, in a nonleague match at USC.

Jose Luis Noriega defeated Byron Black, 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for the only victory for USD (15-3).
