COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Hot Cal State Northridge Sweeps Doubleheader at Pacific

Cal State Northridge extended its winning streak over Division I baseball opponents to four games Saturday by sweeping a nonconference doubleheader at Pacific, 6-5 and 9-2.

CSUN (16-12), which defeated United States International last week and knocked off Pacific on Friday in the opener of a three-game series, plays at Cal State Sacramento today.

John Bushart (3-0), a left-handed freshman from Thousand Oaks High, gave up three runs in the first inning and two in the second before settling down and pitching shutout ball until the eighth of the opener. He was relieved by Eric Spellman.

Craig Clayton and catcher Mike Sims had three hits each in the first game for Northridge while Clayton, Denny Vigo and Scott Sharts pounded home runs.

Sharts’ homer, a two-run, game-tying shot, was his 14th of the season.

Leading, 5-0, after 1 1/2 innings, the Matadors were able to coast in the seven-inning nightcap.

Sharts, Clayton, Greg Shockey and Scott Richardson each had three in the 15-hit onslaught.

In other baseball games:

Pierce 10, Ventura 9 (10 innings)--Joe Cascione scored on an error in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the host Brahmas a Western State Conference victory.

Ventura (12-9, 4-6 in WSC play) scored three runs in the ninth to break a 6-6 tie, but Pierce battled back with three in the bottom of the inning to forge another tie.

Cascione led off the 10th with a walk, then stole second. A two-out infield single by Pat Huston and a throwing error allowed Cascione to score. Pierce improved to 14-9, 3-7.

Mission 24, Compton 7--After losing twice to Harbor, the No. 1-ranked team in the state, earlier in the week, Mission teed off on Compton in a Southern California Athletic Conference game.

Dain Turner three hits and six RBIs for Mission (14-8-1, 6-3).

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 4, San Diego 0--Leslie Stevens notched her first career no-hitter in a second-day game of the Cal State Bakersfield tournament.

Oklahoma State 2, Cal State Northridge 1 (11 innings)--Danielle Wood, a freshman from Hart High, hit a game-tying home run in the seventh inning, but the Matadors ultimately lost the Pony tournament second-round game in an international tiebreaker at Fullerton.

The Lady Matadors continue tournament play today at noon against Minnesota.
