Mater Dei Walks Its Way Past Mission Viejo, 1-0, in Softball

Theresa Conway walked with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to give Mater Dei High School a 1-0 victory over Mission Viejo in a nonleague softball game Monday at Mission Viejo.

Amy Godwin was thrown out at the plate after a passed ball earlier in the inning. Jennifer Clark of Mater Dei (11-0) and Kerin Dull of Mission Viejo both pitched one-hitters.

In another nonleague softball game:

Newport Harbor 13, Costa Mesa 3--Jeni Hall went one for three with four runs batted in for visiting Newport Harbor (2-4).

Katella 2, Magnolia 1--Lisa Helg and Jennifer Clement each drove in runs with singles in the first inning for host Katella. Kelsi Armbruster (4-0) allowed one hit in three innings and Leslie Gerbin pitched four innings of no-hit relief.

In South Coast League baseball:

Dana Hills 10, San Clemente 3--Mike Robertson had three RBIs--two on a fourth-inning home run--for the host Dolphins (6-4, 2-1). Robertson (2-2) also pitched six innings, giving up four hits.

El Toro 2, Mission Viejo 0--Rob Johnson scored from second on a double play in the second inning for El Toro (5-5, 1-2 in league), and the host Chargers added a run in the third on a fielder’s choice. Mission Viejo is 2-3-2, 1-1-1.

Irvine 2, Capistrano Valley 1--Mark Huffman tied the score with an RBI single in the sixth, stole second and scored on Aaron Garcia’s single for host Irvine (6-4, 3-0).
