THE SIDELINES : Davidson, Baseball ‘King,’ Dies
Donald Davidson, special assistant to Houston Astros General Manager Bill Wood, died today after a long battle with cancer. He was 64. Davidson, whose baseball career spanned 40 years, died at 6 a.m. at Memorial Southwest Hospital Hospice in Houston, said Astros spokesman Craig Sanders. He had been battling cancer since 1983.
“There is not a person in the game Donald did not know and care about,” said John J. McMullen, Astros chairman of the board.
The senior member of the Astros staff, Davidson joined the Astros in 1976 as public relations director. He also had served the club as traveling secretary and an as administrative assistant to the president.
Davidson received the prestigious Bill Slocum Award for long and meritorious service in 1971 and was named King of Baseball in 1984.
