Don’t count out the New York Islanders just yet.

The Islanders scored five goals in the final period and defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs, 6-3, Wednesday night to move within one point of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the final playoff berth in the Patrick Division.

It was only the second victory in the past 21 games for the Islanders.

“We needed that or it was adios ,” said Coach Al Arbour, behind the bench for his 1,277th regular-season game.

Arbour moved past Scotty Bowman and into second place on the all-time list behind Dick Irvin (1,437).

Pat LaFontaine scored his 53rd goal for the Islanders, who play host to the Philadelphia Flyers in their final game Saturday night.
