1990 ALL-STARS : Meet the Kings and Queens of the Court : Top Girls Teams Land 2 Spots Each

University, Crossroads and St. Bernard are best represented in selections for the 1990 Times All-Westside girls high school basketball team. Each landed two players on the squad.

University (17-4), a team with many sophomores, made it all the way to the Los Angeles City 3-A championship game before falling to defending champion Marshall.

Crossroads (21-5) extended its Delphic League winning streak to 77 games and advanced further than ever in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, losing to Valley Christian in the 2-A semifinals.

Camino Real League champion St. Bernard (19-6) had another fine team and lost a close game to San Dimas in the 3-A Southern Section semifinals.

University is represented by forwards Alana Collins, a sophomore, and Shaney Fink, a senior. The Crossroads all-stars are senior forward Jamila Banks and junior guard Faye Stapleton. Selections from St. Bernard are senior guard Katrina Ramalho and senior forward-guard Kimberly Robinson.

Others are junior forward Stephanie Collins of Brentwood, junior guard-forward Anael-Stephanie Edwards of Westlake School for Girls, junior guard LaNae Solomon of Marlborough and senior center-forward Erika Threadgill of Westchester.

Banks and Stapleton are the only repeaters from last year, and Banks was named All-Westside for a third straight year.

THE TEAM

Banks--The Delphic League’s most valuable player for the second consecutive year, she was also chosen most valuable at the Westlake School for Girls tournament and made the Cabrillo all-tournament team. She averaged 22.2 points and 9.1 rebounds a game for Coach Larry Weiner.

Alana Collins--She not only led University in scoring with an average of 18.9 points and in rebounding with an average of 14.5, but she also played toward the end of the season with a hairline fracture of her left thumb.

Stephanie Collins--Alana’s older sister was the runner-up to Banks as the Delphic League’s most valuable player and was also an all-Westlake tournament selection. She averaged 16.4 points and 9.7 rebounds for Coach Dan Basmajian.

Edwards--Her last-minute shots, steals and free throws helped Sunshine League champion Westlake win some close games for Coach Dale Maeder. The league’s most valuable player averaged 16.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, nine assists for all games and 3.4 steals in league play.

Fink--Also a top volleyball player, she was a leader of her younger teammates. She averaged 14 rebounds and 8.7 points for Coach Patricia Peisner.

Ramalho--She excelled at passing off to her teammates, averaging 6.7 assists, but she was also a top scorer with an average of 16.9 points.

Robinson--Shifting effortlessly from guard to forward, she averaged 20.1 points and 6.5 rebounds for Coach Lori Pawinski.

Solomon--Runner-up to Edwards as the Sunshine League’s most valuable player, Solomon excelled at driving through the lane and setting up her teammates with shots. Although she averaged just 10 points for Coach Ann DeBoe, she also averaged 5.6 rebounds as a guard, 3.5 assists and 3.3 steals.

Stapleton--She has been a dream player for Coach Larry Weiner because she loves to play defense and does it well. She didn’t score much, averaging 8.3 points, but she helped her teammates score a lot, averaging 9.7 assists.

Threadgill--She was the top player on Coach Beverlie Pendleton’s Westchester squad, averaging 16 rebounds, 13 points and four blocked shots a game.

Culver City--Jenny Nakanishi, Judy Osako, Ailan Wang.

Fairfax--Marhi Bradford, Eula Fritz.

Immaculate Heart--Denise Del Ponte.

Marymount--Abby Kane.

Westlake--Tanya Chen.

The all-star boys and girls teams, each consisting of 10 members, their coaches and parents will be guests of the Times at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 1. at the annual Times High School Basketball Awards Brunch where all-star teams from 12 circulation areas will be honored at the Anaheim Hilton. The players and coaches of the year from each area will be annouced.

The teams were chosen on the basis of a poll of area coaches, who were asked to fill out ballots nominating their own players and opponents, plus the observations of college scouts and sportswriters. Each player will receive the traditional Times golden basketball plaque and award certificate.
