HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : El Camino Real’s Treend Maintains Winning Trend
Pat Treend struck out seven and held Cleveland High to three singles Thursday to lift host El Camino Real to a 4-2 victory in a Northwest Valley Conference baseball game.
Treend (4-0), a senior right-hander, has allowed just one earned run in 27 2/3 innings and has struck out 34. Neither of Cleveland’s runs was earned.
Herman Merchan had two hits for the Conquistadores (6-0-1, 6-0-1), as did Jason Cohen, who led off the third with a solo home run.
Right-hander Bobby McRae (1-1), who threw a two-hitter against Chatsworth last week in his first start, struck out six for Cleveland (2-5, 2-5).
In other baseball games:
Kennedy 13, Canoga Park 1--Senior left-hander Denny Sharp pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy.
Sharp (4-1), who yielded an unearned run in the first, walked two and retired nine in a row from the fourth through sixth innings.
Kennedy’s Lazaro Campos hit his third home run, a two-run shot to highlight a three-run first inning, and Ben Guzman was three for four, including a triple.
Chatsworth 8, San Fernando 8 (6 1/2 innings)--In a game called because of darkness, Tiger center fielder Octavio Serrano forged an 8-8 tie in the fourth with a two-out single to drive in John Najar in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.
Richard Sanchez was three for three and teammate Mike Mancuso hit a bases-loaded triple for Chatsworth (8-3-1, 3-3-1).
San Fernando (8-1-2, 5-1-1) committed six errors and Chatsworth made five.
Taft 5, Granada Hills 5 (10 innings)--Taft’s Benji Belfield went three for four, including a double and a home run, and scored three runs scored in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills that was called because of darkness.
Belfield hit a solo homer to push Taft (5-6-1, 2-4-1) ahead in the ninth, but Gabe Miller of Granada Hills (1-8-2, 0-5-2) hit a run-scoring triple in the bottom half.
Simi Valley 6, Agoura 3--Bill Treadway (2-1), a freshman right-hander, struck out four and scattered eight hits for the victory at Simi Valley.
Joe Gordon and Kenny Hood hit consecutive home runs in the third for the Pioneers (7-4). It was Gordon’s ninth home run and Hood’s fifth.
SOFTBALL
El Camino Real 14, Kennedy 2--Helped by eight Kennedy errors, the Conquistadores turned nine hits into 14 runs to earn a Northwest Valley Conference win at Kennedy.
San Fernando 6, Taft 4--Denise Mendoza struck out seven and had two RBIs to lead the Tigers (8-4, 2-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at home.
