P.H. Horgan III, a former football player, sank four birdies in a five-hole run Thursday for a six-under-par 66 in the first round of the Independent Insurance Agent Open before play was stopped by rain.

Horgan took a one-shot lead over five players before heavy rains hit The Woodlands TPC course, causing play to be suspended at 2:41 p.m. CST.

The round was postponed at 3:58 p.m., and scheduled to resume early today. About half the field was still on the course when play was called.

Horgan, who switched from football to golf while attending the University of Rhode Island, had six birdies and no bogeys over the par-72, 7,042-yard course.

Horgan’s best round of the year gave him a one-shot lead over Fred Couples, Bruce Lietzke, Steve Elkington, Gil Morgan and George Burns.

Horgan’s best finish this year was a tie for 76th in the Doral Open, when he shot a second-round 69, his previous best round of the year.
