NHL ROUNDUP : Yzerman’s Goal Gives Detroit Tie

The Detroit Red Wings and the Philadelphia Flyers ended their dismal seasons in a fitting way Sunday night at Philadelphia--with a 3-3 tie.

Steve Yzerman of the Red Wings scored his 62nd goal of the season to tie the game with 3:20 left in regulation.

Philadelphia finished in last place in the Patrick Division with 71 points and missed the playoffs for the first time in 18 years. Detroit, last in the Norris Division with 70 points, missed the playoffs for the first time in four years.

Boston 3, New Jersey 3--Defenseman Bruce Driver scored with 26 seconds left in regulation to give the Devils the tie at Boston.

With Boston having clinched the Adams Division championship and New Jersey finishing second in the Patrick Division, the only suspense involved a bid by Boston goaltenders Reggie Lemelin and Andy Moog to win the Jennings Trophy for the fewest goals against.

The three goals against Lemelin gave the Boston duo a season total of 232, two less than Montreal’s Patrick Roy and Brian Hayward, who ended the season with 234.

Buffalo 5, Quebec 2--The Nordiques ended the worst season in their 11-year NHL history at Buffalo with a record of 12-61-7 and lows of fewest points (31), fewest goals (240) and most goals against (407) since they left the World Hockey Assn. in 1979.

The Nordiques finished 33 points behind Vancouver, the team with the NHL’s second-lowest point total.

Edmonton 4, Winnipeg 2--Three goals in the second period and one into an empty net gave the Oilers the victory at Winnipeg as the teams tuned up for their upcoming Smythe Division playoff series.

Jari Kurri, Craig Simpson, Glenn Anderson and Petr Klima scored for the Oilers, who will play host to Winnipeg Wednesday night in the opener of their best-of-seven series. Simpson and Anderson scored the tying and go-ahead goals on a power play.

Hartford 1, Montreal 1--Ron Francis scored his career-high 32nd goal with 11 seconds left in the third period after the Whalers pulled goaltender Peter Sidorkiewicz for an extra attacker in the at Hartford. Brian Skrudland had scored for Montreal with 56 seconds left in the second period.

Chicago 4, Minnesota 1--Michel Goulet and Mike Hudson scored first-period goals as the Norris Division-winning Blackhawks won at home.

Chicago finished the regular season with 41 wins, the most since 1982-83 (47). Minnesota ended with 36 victories, the most since 1985-86 (38).

Washington 3, New York Rangers 2--Dino Ciccarelli scored twice in the third period at Madison Square Garden to reach the 40-goal mark for the fifth consecutive season.
