Council Chooses Zarian For 2nd Term as Mayor

Councilman Larry Zarian, 52, was elected unanimously Tuesday to his second one-year term as Glendale’s mayor.

The council annually selects one of its five members to serve as mayor. The role is largely ceremonial, but the mayor presides over the weekly council meetings and represents the city on special occasions.

Zarian, a developer of residential and commercial properties, was elected to the council in 1983. In 1986 he became Glendale’s first mayor of Armenian heritage and a symbol of the city’s large and growing Armenian population.

As he began his second term as mayor, Zarian said controlling Glendale’s growth will remain the key challenge. A native of Massachusetts, Zarian has lived in Glendale for 37 years.

Also on Tuesday, Councilwoman Ginger Bremberg was elected chairwoman of the Glendale Redevelopment Agency. The five council members serve as the agency, which oversees renewal projects. Bremberg has served on the council since 1981.
