PREP ROUNDUP : Mission Viejo Boys Win in Swimming

Mission Viejo High School avoided losing two consecutive South Coast League boys’ dual swimming meets for the first time in Coach Mike Pelton’s 16-year career with an 81-75 victory over El Toro on Thursday.

Mission Viejo clinched the victory by winning the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, in 3 minutes 19.74 seconds, nearly 11 seconds in front of El Toro.

“It’s a relief to get these two weeks over with,” said Pelton, whose team lost to Capistrano Valley for the second consecutive year last Thursday. “I’m real pleased with the way the kids handled it.”

The Diablos were again led by junior Eric Diehl and senior Tsukasa Kawabuchi. Diehl won the 200 individual medley in 1:57.68 and 100 backstroke in 53.13. Kawabuchi doubled in the 100 freestyle (47.25) and 200 freestyle (1:44.33) for the second week in a row.

The El Toro 200-yard medley relay team posted one of Orange County’s top times this season by winning in 1:39.98. Mission Viejo is 4-1, 2-1. El Toro is 7-1, 2-1.

El Toro won the girls’ portion of the meet, 84-72. The Chargers won seven of the 10 events to pull away from previously undefeated Mission Viejo.

El Toro (3-0, 9-0) had two double winners in Cindy Focht and Michelle Perry. Focht won the 200 freestyle (1:55.14) and 500 freestyle (5:04.17). Perry won the 200 IM (2:10.82) and 100 freestyle (53.46).

In other South Coast league boys’ swimming:

Capistrano Valley 94, Irvine 63--Kevin Eggert won the 200 IM (1:57.94) and the 100 backstroke (56:29) for Capistrano Valley.

In Garden Grove League boys’ swimming:

La Quinta 96, Santiago 46--Brett Bhesania won the 200 freestyle (1:52.2) and the 500 freestyle (5:12.4) to lead La Quinta (4-3, 3-1). Mike Tavis won the 200 IM (2:09.2) and the 100 freestyle (52.8) for La Quinta.

In South Coast League girls’ swimming:

Irvine 101, Capistrano Valley 55--Capistrano Valley’s Christy Carolin won the 100 butterfly (1:01.96) and the 50 freestyle (24.45).

In Garden Grove League girls’ swimming:

La Quinta 106, Santiago 27--Kim Bhesania won the 200 freestyle (2:10.6) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.7) to lead La Quinta (4-3, 3-2).

In Empire League volleyball:

Santa Ana 3, Cypress 0--Hector Salcedo had 13 kills and Victor Sanchez served 14 consecutive points in the third game to lead Santa Ana (5-6, 1-3) to a 15-5, 15-11, 15-0 victory.

Foothill 3, Esperanza 2--Jeff Janis had 30 kills and eight stuff blocks to lead Foothill to a 15-13, 10-15, 15-11, 14-16, 15-7 victory. Foothill (8-1, 4-0) setter Jim Crowell had 72 assists.

El Dorado 3, Los Alamitos 1--Joe Ugalde had 18 kills to lead host El Dorado (4-4, 2-2), 15-8, 15-2, 15-17, 16-14.

In Olympic League volleyball:

Santa Margarita 3, Valley Christian 1--Zach Pelzel had 10 kills and six blocks as Santa Margarita (10-3, 5-2) won, 15-10, 15-5, 14-16, 15-4, at Valley Christian.

In Century League golf:

El Modena 219, Foothill 226--El Modena’s Robby Evett and Shawn Craig each shot a four-over-par 41 to lead El Modena at Green River.

In Orange League golf:

Valencia 203, Western 241--Kengo Takahashi shot a one-over 38 as Valencia (11-0, 4-0) moved into sole possesion of first place at Alta Vista. Western is 10-1, 4-1.

Savanna 206, Magnolia 236 (nine holes)--Scott Ohls shot a one-over 37 to lead Savanna (6-9, 3-2) at Dad Miller.

In Pacific Coast League golf:

Trabuco Hills 206, Costa Mesa 295--Mark Christensen shot a one-over 37 to lead Trabuco Hills (9-4, 4-1) at Coto de Caza.

In Pacific Coast League golf:

Laguna Beach 199, Woodbridge 203 (Nine holes)--Jonah Tatch shot par 32 to lead Laguna Beach (6-4, 3-2) at Aliso Creek golf course.

In South Coast League golf:

Irvine 201, Mission Viejo 222--Matt Kyser of Irvine shot a two-over-par 38 to lead Irvine at Rancho San Joaquin in Irvine.

Dana Hills 426, El Toro 435--Scott Richardson shot a one-over par 73 at El Niguel Country Club to lead Dana Hills (11-1, 7-1).

In Sea View League golf:

Estancia 191, University 219--Ken Calvert and Austin Maki each shot a one-over par 37 to lead Estancia at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Ocean View 211, Westminster 226--Ray Shaw shot a five-over par 41 at Mile Square Park t lead Ocean View (3-1 in league).

In Empire League boys’ tennis:

Esperanza 18, Cypress 0--Take Katsube swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host Esperanza (10-3, 4-0).

Savanna 13, Magnolia 5--Savanna (3-5) swept in singles at Magnolia. Todd Merryman swept, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 for Savanna.
