Police in riot gear arrested 11 people, including anti-police brutality activist Don Jackson, during a demonstration Saturday against apartheid and racism in front of the exclusive Los Angeles Country Club, authorities said.

Jackson was arrested when he tried to talk to club managers about allegedly racist membership policies, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Nelson Anderson said. He was with 100 protesters representing the Los Angeles Student Coalition.

Anderson said 10 others were arrested when demonstrators blocked the Wilshire Boulevard entrance to the club and surrounded vehicles trying to enter while screaming “profanities at the occupants.”

Anderson said police closed Wilshire between Comstock Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard to clear the area of demonstrators who had “spilled onto the westbound lanes of Wilshire Boulevard, causing traffic to swerve.”

Jackson was arrested by private security officers at the club and was taken to West Los Angeles jail, where police booked him on suspicion of trespassing, a misdemeanor. The other 10 people arrested, including four juveniles, were booked on suspicion of blocking traffic, Anderson said.

“The four juveniles arrested were booked and released to the custody of their parents,” Anderson said. Bail for the adults was set at $250.

Managers of the Los Angeles Country Club could not be reached for comment.
