Stockton Is Appointed Captain of Ryder Cup Team, Replaces Floyd

Dave Stockton of Mentone, Calif., has been given the task of trying to change America’s luck in the historic Ryder Cup golf matches.

Stockton was appointed captain of the U.S. team for its next meeting with the Europeans, scheduled Sept. 27-29, 1991, on a course under construction at Kiawah Island, S.C.

He succeeds Raymond Floyd, who was a popular choice of the players on the 1989 team to be selected a second time. The United States and Europe played to a 14-14 tie last September at the Belfry, home of the British PGA in Sutton Coldfield, England. The American team lost the 1985 and 1987 matches.

Overall, the United States leads with 21 victories, five losses and two ties. Bernard Gallacher will be the European team captain, succeeding Tony Jacklin, who had two victories, a tie and one loss.

“It’s a thrill and an honor, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, to be named Ryder Cup captain,” said Stockton, 48, a native of San Bernardino and a 1964 graduate of USC.
