PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Katella’s Briggs Decks Los Amigos in Doubleheader

Dennis Briggs tripled, doubled and singled in each game of a doubleheader to lead Katella High School to a sweep of Los Amigos in nonleague baseball play Saturday at Boysen Park. Katella won the first game, 9-1, and the second, 4-0.

Briggs had four runs batted in and Steve Ramey had two hits, scored and had two RBIs in the first game for Katella (13-4).

In the second game, Briggs scored twice, and Danny Allen had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run.

In other nonleague games:

Brea-Olinda 5-3, Kennedy 3-11--Greg Brunet had three hits and two RBIs and Brian Wiley had two hits and an RBI to lead visiting Brea-Olinda (9-6-1) in the first game.

Kennedy scored nine times in the first inning of the second game to earn a split. Rod Rosales had two hits, scored twice and had one RBI, and Scott Wood had two hits and two RBIs for Kennedy in the second game.

Troy 10-8, Valencia 6-14--Scott Weinman hit a grand slam in the second inning to lead Valencia (7-7) in the second game. The Tigers scored four runs in the first inning and seven in the second to win easily. Steve Rewald added two hits and two RBIs for Valencia. Troy is 6-8.

San Clemente 4-9, Santa Barbara 1-1--Rick Brail had two hits, including a double, and Ken Dolan had a double and three RBIs to lead host San Clemente (4-9) in the first game. Jeff Stay (1-4) pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven and walking one, for San Clemente.

Shane Shanafelt hit a two-run home run and Dolan added a solo homer for San Clemente in the second game. Wes Stewart struck out five for the Tritons.

Santa Barbara is 4-12.

In the first round of the St. Paul Catholic School baseball tournament:

Mater Dei 9, Daniel Murphy 1--Eleazar Elizondo, Jim Doyle and Mike Ferletic combined to throw a three-hitter for Mater Dei, which pulled its starters after taking a 6-0 lead after two innings. Trevor Ickes, Jim Betzsold, Brian Hudson and Collin Gawronski each doubled for the Monarchs (12-5).

Servite 7, Bell-Jeff 3--Blain Patriquin and Ryan Boucher each had two hits, scored twice and had an RBI to lead the host Friars (12-5).
