Reports Say That Former Virginia Player Jeff Jones Will Be Named Cavalier Coach
Jeff Jones, an assistant coach and former player at Virginia, will be named to succeed Terry Holland as head coach, two newspapers reported today.
Virginia Athletic Director Jim Copeland reached his decision Saturday and is expected to announce the choice either today or Tuesday, the Roanoke Times & World-News and the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
Jones, 29, could not be reached for comment Sunday night. When reached by phone Sunday night, Copeland said he would not comment on the reports.
Jones played for Virginia between 1978-82 on teams that won the National Invitation Tournament and reached the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.
He returned to Virginia in 1982 as a graduate assistant. He became a part-time assistant the following year and was promoted to full-time assistant for the 1986-87 season.
Holland, Virginia’s winningest coach (326-173), announced in June that he would return to his alma mater, Davidson, as athletic director after the 1989-90 season.
