PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Smith’s Fifth No-Hitter Sparks Garden Grove

Stephanie Smith pitched her fifth no-hitter of the season, striking out 11 and walking two, as Garden Grove High School defeated La Quinta, 2-0, in a Garden Grove League softball game Tuesday at La Quinta.

Michelle Cash and Brandie Novack each singled in a run for Garden Grove (15-3-1, 6-0-1) in the fourth inning.

In other Garden Grove League softball games:

Kennedy 3, Pacifica 1--Cheryl Longeway (11-2) pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts for host Kennedy. Lana Jimenez had two hits and scored two runs. Kennedy is 15-2-1, 6-0-1.

Los Amigos 12, Santiago 7--Renee Hernandez hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to break a 7-7 tie at Santiago. Hernandez went two for four with five RBIs and Los Amigos (6-14, 2-5) had 14 hits.

Bolsa Grande 5, Rancho Alamitos 0--Winning pitcher Karie Benefiel (3-1) allowed five hits and had six strikeouts for visiting Bolsa Grande. Bolsa Grande (7-9, 3-4) scored three in the third inning when Rancho Alamitos (4-9, 1-6) committed three errors.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 5, Santa Ana 0--Munique Hernandez (6-2) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and Tracy Colombo had two hits and an RBI for visiting Villa Park (8-8-1, 3-0).

Santa Ana Valley 9, El Modena 8--Host Santa Ana Valley scored three runs in the first, two in the second and four in the fifth to build a 9-0 lead. El Modena rallied for eight runs on five hits in the sixth. Santa Ana Valley is 7-6, 2-1.

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 1, Loara 0--Deann Chesebro tripled in the fourth to score Christy Bowles for host Los Alamitos. Shannon Skoglund (7-1) allowed three hits and struck out eight for the Griffins (12-6, 2-1).

Cypress 3, Esperanza 1 (10 innings)--Liz Moore had three hits, including a two-run double in the 10th inning at Esperanza. Cypress (21-4, 3-0) tied the score with a run in the seventh on Amy Miller’s RBI single. Tracie Noggle was four for five and drove in Esperanza’s only run with a single in the first inning. Esperanza is 5-10, 0-3.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 5, Fullerton 0--Bernie Fancuberta pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight, for visiting Sunny Hills (6-10, 2-1). Mendi Goldsmith, Kelly Ward and Fancuberta each had two hits for Sunny Hills. Fullerton pitcher Cathleen Kennedy allowed six hits and gave up five unearned runs. Fullerton is 7-7, 2-1.

Buena Park 13, Troy 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Shannon Akau pitched a one-hitter for host Buena Park (11-1-1, 3-0). Buena Park had only three hits but three Troy pitchers walked 15 batters.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 7, Costa Mesa 1--Jennifer Milo was two for three with three RBIs for host Laguna Hills (4-12, 1-2).

Trabuco Hills 4, Woodbridge 1--Linda Lunceford and Emily Leckley each went three for four and Christy Lunceford went two for four with a two-run home run in the seventh inning for Trabuco Hills (14-6, 3-0). Allison Ward hit a solo homer in the fourth for host Woodbridge (2-1 in league).

In the Sunset League:

Marina 6, Edison 0--Willa Parchen allowed two hits and struck out 10 for host Marina (18-4, 3-0).

Huntington Beach 3, Ocean View 0--Laura Minard (2-4) pitched a four-hitter for host Huntington Beach (3-12, 1-2). Dana Jahr had a two-run single and later scored for Huntington Beach in the fourth inning.

Fountain Valley 4, Westminster 0--Rae Rice pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for visiting Fountain Valley (14-3, 3-0).
