SCHOOL NEWS : San Marino Takes 16 Awards at Convention

San Marino High School won a number of awards and two statewide offices at the 35th annual California Junior Classical League Convention last month in Irvine.

Nearly 1,350 students from around the state met at University High School for a weekend of competition and activities related to the study of Latin.

San Marino senior Alex Lin was elected state president and junior Jeni Chih was elected corresponding secretary.

San Marino placed third in overall participation for large schools, behind Hoover High School in Glendale and Marina High School in Huntington Beach. Sixty San Marino students attended the convention.

In the academic contests, San Marino captured 16 awards, including three first and four second places. San Marino winners in different Levels of Latin study included:

Derivatives: David Feldon, Level I, third.

Grammar: Betty Shen, Level I, first; Pat Huang, Level I, fifth; Alex Lin, Level III, second; Michael Chu, Levels IV and V, fourth.

History: Wei-Ko Lin, Level I, first.

Mythology: Jamie Bass, Level I, fifth; Oliver Wang, Levels IV and V, second.

Numerology: May Wong, Level I, first; Emily Kuo, Level I, second; Johnny Lai, Level I, fifth; Tim Louie, Level III, fourth; Arlinda Lee, Levels IV and V, fourth.

Pentathlon: Chad Houck, Level I, fourth.

Vocabulary: Millie Chu, Level I, second; Brian Shen, Level II, fourth.

Creative and graphic arts: Lisa Houle, collage, fifth; Elizabeth Stratford, first in dramatic reading and fourth in video; Alice Syiau, charcoal, fourth.

Olympics: Michael Chu, triple jump, third; Alisa Roberts, high jump, first; Lewis Ng, 100-meter breast stroke, first.
