TENNIS ROUNDUP : Frenchman Surprises Chesnokov

Fabrice Santoro, a 17-year-old Frenchman, upset defending champion Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, 6-3, 6-4, in the Phillips Open Thursday at Nice, France.

In other second-round matches, Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland downed Claudio Pistolesi of Italy, 6-4, 6-4; Juan Aguilera of Spain ousted Aki Rahunen of Finland, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; and Marc Rosset of Switzerland eliminated Spain’s Tomas Carbonell, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4.

Santoro broke Chesnokov in the seventh and ninth games of the first set, then jumped to a 3-1 lead in the second set. Chesnokov broke the Frenchman for 5-4, but Santoro broke back to win the match.

Top-seeded Monica Seles of Yugoslavia eased into the quarterfinals by beating Donna Faber, 6-0, 6-1, but second-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain had to rally to defeat Cecilia Dahlman of Sweden, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, in the $225,000 Eckerd Open at Largo, Fla.

No. 6 Helen Kelesi of Canada beat Samantha Smith of England, 6-2, 6-4, and No. 8 Susan Sloane beat Mary Lou Daniels, 6-2, 6-4.
