ROUNDUP : No. 1 Tustin Makes It Look Easy

Ben Munoz hit a solo home run and pitched five hitless innings to lead Tustin High School, Orange County’s top-ranked team, to a 22-0 victory over visiting Newport Harbor in a Sea View League baseball game Friday.

Munoz had three hits, scored three times and had two runs batted in. Shawn Green had three hits, scored three runs and had three RBIs for Tustin. Munoz, who left after the fifth inning because he had thrown his limit of pitches, was replaced by Green, who allowed two hits in two innings.

Tustin (15-3 and 8-1 in league) had 19 hits and scored in every inning.

In another Sea View League game:

Corona del Mar 5, Saddleback 3--Rees Thorkelson hit a home run for host Corona del Mar in the fourth inning to cut Saddleback’s lead to 2-1. The Sea Kings (8-11, 3-6) scored three in the fifth, capped by a two-run single by Tyler Blake.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 5, Villa Park 4--Cesar Ruiz tripled to lead off the fifth inning and Mike Murtaugh singled him in to give Santa Ana Valley (9-10, 3-6) a 4-3 lead. Murtaugh stole second, went to third on a sacrifice and winning pitcher Alex Alvarado (2-0) squeezed him home. Jose Sandoval had two hits, including a double, and had three RBIs for Santa Ana Valley. Alex Vaccaro doubled, tripled and had three RBIs for Villa Park.

Santa Ana 14, Foothill 8--Leo Arroyo had three hits, two RBIs and scored three times, and Santiago Lopez doubled, homered and scored three times to lead Santa Ana (8-11, 4-5). Kent Donnelly hit a three-run home run for Foothill (8-10-1, 5-3-1).

Canyon 7, El Modena 5 (12 innings)--Lee Torres hit a two-run home run in the 12th inning for visiting Canyon (8-10-1, 6-2-1). Jason Wakefield doubled in a run to tie the score, 5-5.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 13, Fullerton 12--In the seventh inning, Chris Looney doubled down the right-field line and drove in three runs for visiting Sunny Hills (10-9, 5-3), which moved into a tie for first place with Troy. D.C. Olsen went 5 for 5 and had two home runs--to give him 10 for the season--and had five RBIs for Fullerton. Ladd Brunner went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and Bobby Patel had a home run and three RBIs for Fullerton.

Troy 4, Buena Park 3 (8 innings)--Matt Carter singled to center field with two outs to score Steve Friedrich to lead host Troy. Craig Cochell had two hits, two stolen bases and had one RBI and Jason Gudzunas had a hit and two RBIs for Troy (8-8, 5-3). Buena Park is 5-4 in league.

Sonora 5, La Habra 2--Ryan Lewis had two doubles and two RBIs and Curtis Lucero had two hits and one RBI to lead visiting Sonora (10-8, 5-4).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 2, Pacifica 1--Through five innings, Pacifica pitcher Robert Toth had struck out 10 and allowed one hit, but host La Quinta (15-6, 7-1) scored two runs in the sixth.

Kennedy 9, Rancho Alamitos 1--Scott Wood went two for four, including a two-run home run, and had three RBIs and Richard Lyon added three RBIs for host Kennedy (10-11, 5-3). Brian Faddoul (4-4) pitched a four-hitter and struck out eight for Kennedy.

Bolsa Grande 4, Los Amigos 3--Trent Wood tripled in two runs in the sixth for Bolsa Grande (5-12-1, 1-7), which held on for its first league victory. Los Amigos (7-13, 5-3) scored a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Santiago 10, Garden Grove 9--Garden Grove led, 9-2, before host Santiago scored one run in the fifth, four in the sixth and three in the seventh. David Smith, who had two hits and three RBIs, drove in two runs in the seventh to tie the score, 9-9. Robert Jung went 3 for 3 with one RBI for Santiago (12-6, 6-2).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 7, Santa Margarita 4--Doug Senne hit a three-run home run in a seven-run sixth inning for Orange Lutheran (12-6, 6-2). Matt Hendren (5-2) pitched five innings, allowed one run on five hits, struck out five and walked one. Santa Margarita is 6-8, 3-5.

Whitney 20, Capistrano Valley Christian 13--Kevin Biniasz went 3 for 4, hit a home run and had four RBIs for host Capistrano Valley. Between the two teams, the game had 27 hits and nine errors. Whitney is 6-7 and 3-5.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 5, Western 3--Steve Rewald had two hits and Justin Jimenez hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie for Valencia (8-8, 3-6) over host Western (5-12, 3-6). John Garcia (2-1) pitched a five-hitter, striking out five and walking two.

Brea-Olinda 5, Magnolia 2--Greg Brunet went two for three with two RBIs and John Lynn (4-0) allowed six hits and struck out 11 for host Brea-Olinda (12-6-1, 6-2-1).

Anaheim 10, Savanna 5--Danny Castro doubled, tripled and had four RBIs to lead Anaheim (12-6-1, 6-2-1) at Brookhurst Park. Zeke Barrios hit a two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning for Anaheim.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 12, Orange 4--Matt Maffei had three hits, including a two-run homer, and four RBIs to lead host Laguna Hills (13-7, 8-1). Maffei (3-1) also pitched four innings for the victory. Ted Wilkes hit a three-run home run in the second to give Laguna Hills a 5-1 lead. Orange (9-9, 5-4) is three games behind Laguna Hills in the league standings.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 4, Westminster 2--Mike DeValk drove in two runs for host Huntington Beach. J.P. Rizzo, who came in to pitch in the sixth inning with the bases loaded, saved the victory for Josh Faur. Huntington Beach is 10-8 and 5-4.

Marina 1, Fountain Valley 0--David Schultz scored on Brad Barton’s single in the second inning for Marina. Schultz (4-1) pitched five innings, allowing one hit and six walks and striking out three to lead Marina. Sean Patterson got his first save.
