ROUNDUP : Murphy, Pierce Post 10-4 Win
Chris Murphy scattered eight hits and struck out seven to spark Pierce College to a 10-4 Western State Conference win over host Bakersfield on Saturday.
Murphy (3-7) received support from Pat Huston, who rapped out three hits and drove in four runs; Mike Schwartzer, who had three hits; and Scott Cadenhead, who struck a two-run double in the fifth inning. Pierce improved to 13-19, 6-11 in conference play.
In other college baseball games:
Santa Barbara 5, Oxnard 3 (10 innings)--The Condors yielded three runs in the top of the 10th in a Western State Conference game at Oxnard.
Chuck Foster forged a 1-1 tie in the second for Oxnard (14-20, 5-12), hitting a sacrifice fly to score Patrick Avila. John Swanson came home on Avila’s single in the fourth.
Oxnard’s Sean Segovia hit a sacrifice fly to score Juan Cuellar in the 10th, but the comeback fell short.
Oxnard’s Jamie Cyphers (3-5), who struck out seven and scattered six hits in 9 1/3 innings, allowed five runs, all earned.
Citrus 5, Antelope Valley 0--Bob Collett of host Citrus threw a one-hitter and struck out two in a Foothill Conference game. Antelope Valley’s Wes Wheeler had his team’s lone hit, a third-inning single.
Tim Graham (2-7) absorbed the loss for Antelope Valley (8-23, 4-15), surrendering nine hits in going the distance.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Cal Lutheran 3-6, Azusa Pacific 4-1--Regal pitcher Leslie Stevens had four hits, extending her hitting streak to 14, and scattered five hits in the nightcap to salvage an NAIA District 3 split at Cal Lutheran.
Stevens, who improved to 9-4, tripled and singled in runs in the first game and scored a run in the second. Teri Peppi had two hits, drove in two runs and stole a base for Cal Lutheran (25-10-2, 14-2 in District 3).
Cal Lutheran’s Dani Piotrowski stole four bases, bringing her season total to 19. Piotrowski stole a record 22 bases in 1988.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Loyola 7, Chaminade 2--Brian Dennis pitched a five-hitter for host Loyola (7-8) in a nonleague game.
Dennis also tripled and drove in a run for Loyola, while teammate Sean Coston had two hits and two runs batted in.
For Chaminade (10-8-1), Jeff Burdick went two for three with two doubles.
Crespi 8, La Serna 3--The Celts turned three hits, two hit-batsmen, two errors and a walk into a seven-run second inning, and, ultimately, a victory in the ninth-place game of the Redondo tournament at La Serna.
Bill Canalez and Victor Seper each had two hits for Crespi (13-7-1). Right-handed reliever Pat Bennett (5-1) earned the victory, pitching two innings of no-hit shutout ball.
Gahr 5, Notre Dame 1--Although each team had five hits, Gahr utilized its speed, stealing six bases in the seventh-place game of the Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament at Notre Dame.
Vinnie Orlando singled, stole second and third and scored Notre Dame’s lone run on an overthrow.
Eric Vellozzi, who struck out four and walked five in 5 2/3 innings, was charged with the loss.
“Every one of their guys is really looking to run,” Notre Dame Coach Bob Mandeville said. “When we walk a guy or they get a base hit, it’s almost like a double.”
