COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Long Beach Dispatches Irvine, 9-4

Todd Guggiana had three hits, scored twice and had three runs batted in to lead Cal State Long Beach to a 9-4 victory over UC Irvine in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday at Irvine.

Guggiana hit a solo home run in the second inning to give the 49ers a 6-0 lead. Long Beach (29-17-1, 6-5 in conference) scored five times in the first inning off David Bladow (5-4), who retired only four batters.

Tom Urbani (5-1) pitched a nine-hitter, struck out five and allowed six walks and three earned runs for the victory.

Osmar DeChavez and Freddy Combs each had two hits for Irvine (26-20, 4-7).

The Anteaters scored three times in the ninth. Ed Luna’s single drove in Craig Plumley and Mike Goodcase.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Cal State Northridge 8, Chapman 5--Scott Richardson’s three-run triple in the third inning put Cal State Northridge (28-15, 15-6) ahead for good, 5-3, in a game hosted by Chapman (23-19, 13-11) at Hart Park. Richardson scored later in the inning and Northridge added two runs in the fourth to lead, 8-3. Chapman got a three-run homer by Doug Yates in the first inning and a two-run double by Mark Landros in the fourth.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Christ College Irvine 7-2, Point Loma Nazarene 6-5 (second game eight innings)--Matt Dahlgren scored on a passed ball in the top of the ninth to give Christ College Irvine (19-21, 5-10) a victory in the first game. Lou Simon had two hits in the first game, including a two-run home run in the seventh. Mark Ratekin hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to give Point Loma Nazarene (15-23, 2-11) a victory in the second game, which was scheduled at seven innings.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 5-1, San Jose State 0-2--Missy Coombes had three RBIs and Ann Van Dortrecht (25-6) pitched a three-hitter to lead visiting Cal State Fullerton (39-14, 17-8) in the first game. San Jose State (26-24, 10-16) scored twice in the seventh to win the second game. Jane Meneses scored the winning run on a single by Darcy Stapley.

In nonconference softball:

Christ College Irvine 11-14, Loyola Marymount 1-0--Lisa Merenda (16-7) had a three-hitter in the first game and Michelle Vail had a one-hitter in the second for Christ College Irvine (29-18). Tracy Schultz, who had two hits with three RBIs, and Judy Lotton, who had two hits and one RBI, led Christ College Irvine’s attack in the opener. In the second game, Donna Joslen had three hits, including a double and triple, and five RBIs; De Brunk had four hits and two RBIs, and Kathy Carroll added three hits and three RBIs.

In Big West Conference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, Fresno State 4--UC Irvine’s Richard Lubner defeated Greg Andersen, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 to tie the match in singles play at 3-3. Lubner teamed with Trevor Kronemann to defeat Marcos Garzo and Burt Lemercier, 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (9-7), 6-3, to break the 4-4 tie. The teams played for 6 1/2 hours at Fresno State (14-9, 4-1). Irvine is 17-11, 5-0.

In Big West Conference women’s tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 7, Hawaii 2--Caroline Sporer defeated Justine Tate, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, to lead host Cal State Fullerton (13-14, 5-6).
