Cubs’ Sandberg Sets Error-Free Record
Ryne Sandberg set a major league record for second basemen with his 480th consecutive errorless play Sunday for the Chicago Cubs.
Sandberg caught a throw from third baseman Luis Salazar in the fifth inning, forcing Pittsburgh’s Wally Backman at second.
Sandberg broke the previous mark of 479 chances set by Philadelphia’s Manny Trillo from April 8 to July 31, 1982. Trillo’s stretch extended over 89 games, plus two partial games. The game, won by Pittsburgh, 3-2, was Sandberg’s 102nd in a row without an error.
