MOTOR RACING ROUNDUP : Brett Bodine’s First Victory Comes With Controversy
Brett Bodine earned his first Winston Cup victory in 79 career starts on Sunday by holding off Darrell Waltrip at the First Union 400 NASCAR stock car race at North Wilkesboro, N.C., Speedway.
Bodine beat Waltrip to the checkered flag by less than a second to win $50,682.
The finish was controversial. Bodine was designated the leader following the final caution flag, although he had pitted and leaders Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt stayed on the track.
Following the delay, the pace car picked up Earnhardt’s Chevrolet. But NASCAR officials directed it to pick up Bodine’s car instead.
Lori Johns defeated three drivers who have reigned as NHRA/Winston world champions en route to victory at the 10th annual Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.
Other winners were Ed McCulloch in Funny Car and Larry Morgan in Pro Stock.
Johns, 24, of Corpus Christi, Tex., defeated two-time champion Joe Amato for her second career victory.
Johns covered the quarter-mile distance in 5.021 seconds at 270.43 m.p.h.
