USD Wins WCC Men’s Tennis Title, but Noriega Is Upset in Semifinals

The University of San Diego won its second consecutive West Coast Conference men’s tennis team title Sunday at USD, but defending singles champion Jose Luis Noriega of USD was upset by Pepperdine freshman Alejo Mancisidor in the singles semifinals, 6-2, 6-3.

Mancisidor then defeated USD senior Dan Mattera, 7-5, 6-3, in the finals. Mattera had advanced by defeating teammate Chris Toomey, 6-1, 6-1.

Noriega and J.R. Edwards won the doubles title by defeating Pepperdine’s Tomer Zimmerman and Kevin O’Neill, 7-3, 6-4.

USD finished with 90 points to Pepperdine’s 81.

Unranked San Diego State (18-7) defeated No. 24 Fresno State, 5-4, in Fresno. At No. 2, SDSU’s Tole Marinkovic defeated Greg Anderson, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, in a four-hour match.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Due to rain, the singles and doubles finals of the West Coast Conference Championships could not be played at St. Mary’s and will be completed at USD at a date to be determined. Pepperdine leads with 81 points, with USD in second with 78.

BASEBALL

Miah Bradbury, a Mt. Carmel graduate, hit a grand slam and a two-run homer to lead Loyola Marymount to a 16-7 victory over host USIU. Bradbury went four for five with seven RBIs for No. 9 ranked Loyola Marymount (36-10). Pat Cheek went two for four with three RBIs including a two-run homer in the ninth inning for USIU (11-35).

Hawaii scored three runs in the eighth inning to beat visiting San Diego State, 6-2, in a Western Athletic Conference game. Anthony Johnson went two for four for SDSU (32-16, 12-4). Dwayne Daughtry went two for four with an RBI for Hawaii (29-18-1, 9-6-1).

In a doubleheader late Saturday, SDSU lost the first game, 3-2, but won the second, 7-0.

SOFTBALL

San Diego State split a doubleheader with Fresno State, the Aztecs first victory over FSU since 1985 in Big West Conference play. Fresno State (48-11, 26-6) won the first game, 1-0, SDSU the second, 1-0. Stephanie Chapel drove in Jennifer Droback on a single in the first inning for SDSU (18-28, 9-26). SDSU pitcher Sara Ahern (4-14) retired the last 10 batters.

GOLF

USD is second (305) behind San Francisco (297) after the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships at Half Moon Bay Golf Course. Defending champion Pepperdine trails USD with 306. Kenneth Elmore (USF) shot two under par 70 to lead individual play. USD’s Rick Schultz shot a 74, tied for fifth with John McMullen of USF.
