BASEBALL

San Diego State gave up five runs in the first inning on the way to an 8-3 loss to UC Irvine. Fred Combs doubled in two runs and Shelby Niss tripled in two more as the Anteaters took the early lead. Combs went four for four and Niss went three for four for Irvine (28-20).

Chapman scored twice in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie, then went on to a 5-2 nonconference victory against the University of San Diego. Chapman improved to 24-19. The Toreros dropped to 20-27.

Kevin Crabtree’s solo home run capped a four-run ninth inning as U.S. International defeated visiting Cal State Northridge, 12-11, in a nonconference game. USIU trailed, 10-5, going into the eighth. Kyle Sebach went three for five and picked up the victory for the Gulls (12-35-1).

Azusa Pacific, the first-place team in the Golden West Athletic Conference, handed Point Loma Nazarene College a 17-3 loss.

PLNC fell to 15-26-1, 2-14 in conference. For PLNC, Gaylond Ishi went two for two and Mark Ratekin hit a two-run double in the seventh.

SOFTBALL

SDSU and USIU split a doubleheader, the Aztecs winning the first game, 2-1, and the Gulls winning the second, 4-3, at USIU. The Gulls improved to 23-25.

GOLF

USD men placed third (933) in the West Coast Conference championships at Half Moon Bay Golf Links. San Francisco won the conference title (894) and Pepperdine placed second (901). USF’s John McMullen won with 218. USD’s Creighton Aotani tied for ninth (229) edging teammate Rick Schultz who shot 230.
