Town-House Project Rejected

Plans to build a gated, 17-unit town-house community next to the San Diego Freeway were rejected Tuesday by the Torrance City Council.

Council members voted unanimously to reject development plans for the 2.43-acre site on the northeast corner of Yukon and 182nd streets, noting that traffic congestion at that intersection already poses a problem.

Instead, council members encouraged ISCO Industries, which is in escrow to purchase the site from Southern California Edison, to bring in plans for a single-family tract development there.

The land carries “residential professional” zoning, a rare designation that allows houses, apartments, condominiums or professional offices, but requires city review of any construction.

More than two dozen neighbors who spent three hours testifying against the project cheered the council’s decision.

ISCO representatives said they will determine whether they can afford to scale back the project to meet single-family zoning requirements, which would allow construction of no more than 12 houses.
