HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Birmingham Stretches Streak to 10 Wins With Conquest of Van Nuys

Birmingham High jumped to a four-run lead and held on to beat visiting Van Nuys, 5-3, Wednesday for its 10th consecutive victory, the longest winning streak in Wayne Sink’s 12 seasons as Birmingham’s coach.

Jason Mansfield and Josh Brown combined to limit Van Nuys to four hits in the Mid-Valley League game. Mansfield (4-3) struck out seven before Brown came on in the seventh to earn his first save of the season.

Catcher Seth Rosenzweig drove in two runs. Birmingham (15-5-1, 9-4 in league play) scored five runs on four hits.

Tony Gonzalez pitched a complete game for Van Nuys, which fell to 4-7, 4-7.

In other baseball games:

Monroe 7, Reseda 2--Senior left-hander Sean Henson threw five innings of no-hit ball before settling for a three-hitter to lead Monroe in a Mid-Valley League game at home.

Henson (3-4) struck out four and walked two for Monroe (6-8, 4-7). Reseda’s Ray Perez led off the sixth with a single to break up the no-hit bid.

Right-hander Jesse Yeomans took the loss for Reseda (4-8, 5-10).

Sylmar 10, Grant 3--Starter Gonzalo Hernandez held Grant hitless for 4 2/3 innings en route to victory in an East Valley League game at Grant.

Dereck Ornelas had a triple and a home run for the Spartans (13-6, 7-4).

Newbury Park 17, Simi Valley 10--Five Simi Valley pitchers combined to walk 12 batters in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

Joe Gordon slammed his 12th home run for Simi Valley (10-10, 4-5). Senior left-hander Kenny Hood (6-2), who did not survive the first inning, took the loss for the Pioneers.

Chaminade 6, La Salle 2--Ted Corcoran, a sophomore left-hander, pitched a five-hitter and helped his cause with three hits and two runs batted in in the visiting Eagles’ third consecutive San Fernando Valley League victory.

Justin Stark and Jeff Burdick each had two hits for Chaminade (11-8-1, 3-2).

Harvard 3, St. Genevieve 1--Bobby Mason singled and homered, accounting for two of Harvard’s three hits, in a San Fernando Valley League game at North Valley field.

Royal 6, Camarillo 1--Senior right-hander Ed Smith (1-2) scattered eight hits, struck out four and walked two to lead the Highlanders in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

SOFTBALL

Alemany 24, St. Genevieve 0 (four innings)--Sophomore Stacey Hart pitched four perfect innings and struck out seven before the San Fernando Valley League game at Branford Park was called because of the 10-run rule.

Notre Dame 5, Chaminade 2--Visiting Notre Dame scored all the runs it needed in a three-run first inning, and Becca Berline limited Chaminade to four hits in the San Fernando Valley League game.

Kim Fischer and Darcy Anderson each had two hits for Notre Dame (10-5, 3-0).

Bell-Jeff 2, Louisville 0--Bell-Jeff scored in the first and third innings off Erin Cantwell (1-1), who threw a complete game for visiting Louisville (5-8, 1-4) in a San Fernando Valley League loss.

VOLLEYBALL

Harvard d. Chaminade 15-8, 15-8, 15-3--Rick Osterloh had 11 kills to pace the Saracens to their 57th consecutive league victory in a San Fernando Valley League match at Chaminade.

North Hollywood d. Van Nuys, 15-11, 12-15, 5-15, 15-12, 16-14--Jaime Anaya had 12 kills, Gerard Tevant added 10 and Gerardo De La Cruz had 31 assists to lead North Hollywood to an upset victory in a three-hour Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

Monroe d. Grant, 12-15, 15-8, 18-16, 15-7--Matt Johnson had 18 kills and setter Erik Ramey had 50 assists to pace Monroe (12-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

Reseda d. Sylmar, 15-4, 15-1, 15-6--Scott Kent had 13 kills, Shad Dockery 11 and Jeff Kent seven for Reseda in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Sylmar.

Taft d. Kennedy, 15-8, 15-3, 15-10--Adam Friedman led Taft (10-1, 6-1) with eight kills in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Kennedy (8-4, 3-3).

Chatsworth d. Cleveland, 15-3, 14-16, 15-12, 15-13--Mike Nast and Ryan Labovitch combined for 35 kills for Chatsworth (11-2, 7-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Cleveland.
