PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Katella Beats Cypress for 8th Victory in Row

Chris Drummond pitched a complete-game victory, but his scoreless inning streak ended at 27 2/3 as Katella High School defeated Cypress, 8-3, in an Empire League game at Boysen Park in Anaheim.

Cypress scored two runs in the fifth with the help of a two-out bloop single off Drummond (6-0).

Jess Evans hit a two-run home run, just to the right of the 400-foot sign in center field in the first, and Dennis Briggs had two hits and two RBIs for Katella (16-4, 7-3). The Knights have won eight in a row, but are still three games behind first-place Esperanza.

In other Empire League games:

Esperanza 8, Loara 3--Erickson Dumual had two hits and scored a run and Dan Redington had two hits and three RBIs for host Esperanza (16-4, 10-0). Joe Foss (5-0) pitched four innings for the victory and Keith McDonald pitched three innings for his fifth save.

Los Alamitos 7, El Dorado 3--Doug Kieck hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to give the Griffins (9-11-1, 6-4) a 4-2 lead at El Dorado. Todd Gragnano pitched six innings, striking out six, to get the victory. Gar Vallone had two doubles for El Dorado (11-10, 3-7).

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 1, Santiago 0 (8 innings)--Chris Castellano had a one-out squeeze bunt in the eighth to score Chris Shockley with the winning run for host Pacifica (11-10, 4-5). Winning pitcher Rob Toth (6-4) pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Kennedy 13, Bolsa Grande 3--Kennedy scored eight runs in the first inning with the help of three hits and eight Bolsa Grande errors at Bolsa Grande.

Scott Wood, Rod Rosales and Bryan Walsh had two hits each for Kennedy (11-11, 6-3).

Garden Grove 5, Los Amigos 1--Shawn Zingali (4-3) pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven, to lead host Garden Grove (7-9, 4-5). Rob Wursthorn had three hits and two RBIs, and Joe Aguirre had two triples and scored twice.

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 4, Anaheim 0--Chad Phillips (4-2) pitched a four-hitter and had eight strikeouts for visiting Magnolia (7-8, 6-4). Tony Treul had three hits and two RBIs. Mauricio Hernandez drove in the other runs.

Brea-Olinda 3, Valencia 2--Chad Marlowe had two hits and an RBI and Mike Ryan had two RBIs to lead Brea-Olinda. Tim Carmen (2-1) pitched six innings and struck out 10 for Brea-Olinda (13-6-1, 7-2-1). Valencia is 8-9, 3-7.

In the Sea View League:

University 6, Saddleback 3--Steve Hagins, a freshman catcher, had a two-run double in the first and David Clark had two hits and an RBI for University (10-10, 3-7).

Tustin 14, Corona del Mar 2--Ben Munoz had three hits and scored three times and Ryan Relph had four hits, including a three-run home run in the third inning. for visiting Tustin (17-3, 9-1). Bill Courtney (6-0) was the winning pitcher.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 4, Irvine 0--Travis Burgus set a school record by pitching his second consecutive shutout. He has allowed only an unearned run in his last 22 innings. Jonathan Petke led Capistrano Valley (12-7-1, 5-4-1) with two hits, including a bases-empty home run, and drove in two runs.

Dana Hills 11, San Clemente 3--Mike Robertson (4-3) pitched six innings, allowing six hits, for the victory for visiting Dana Hills (11-9-1, 5-5). Robertson had three hits, including two doubles, and scored three times. Alby Sukut had three hits, includings two doubles, and Lance Marks hit a two-run home run.

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 4, Westminster 1--Gil Gonzales hit a two-run single in the fifth as visiting Ocean View (16-5, 10-0) won a game that was the completion of a protested game from April 6. Jim Gwaltney (6-1) pitched 2 1/3 innings for the victory.
