Canyons Forward Millender Leads California Trio on District 10 Team

Tressie Millender, College of the Canyons’ all-time leading scorer and rebounder, has been named to the five-player Kodak District 10 junior college basketball team.

Millender was the leading vote-getter among the three California players selected to the team, which includes players from Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

Millender, a 5-foot-10 forward, was the Western State Conference’s most valuable player.

Mark MacArthur and Marlys Newey have been named the male and female athletes of the year at The Master’s College in a vote by varsity coaches.

MacArthur, a senior shortstop, has broken seven school career records. He is the school’s all-time leader in home runs with 27 and in hits with 195.

Newey, a senior cross-country runner, was voted the National Christian College cross-country athlete of the year.

Nancy Reagan will be awarded the Tom Landry Medal at Cal Lutheran’s benefit banquet May 3 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

The medal is presented to those who are “an inspiration to the youth of America and provide leadership through their Christian commitments.”

Landry, the former coach of the Dallas Cowboys, will present the award to the former First Lady for her work against drug abuse.

Some past recipients include former President Gerald Ford and comedian Bob Hope.

Sophomore guard Jeff deLaveaga, Cal Lutheran’s leading scorer, was named the basketball team’s hardest worker at the recent team banquet. Sophomore guard Brad Adam won an award for academics and senior center Mike Demeter was tabbed most improved player.

The most-inspirational-player award was given to freshman forward Wayne Dominick.

Valley College shortstop Karin Knoop signed a softball letter of intent Thursday with Cal State Fullerton. Knoop, an All-Western State Conference selection last season, is batting .333 this year for Valley (9-23).

The Cal Lutheran basketball team is sponsoring a three-on-three tournament April 29 at the university. Each team is guaranteed two games and will receive T-shirts.
