Villanova’s women’s distance runners beat the world best in the 6,000-meter relay at the Penn Relays.

The team of Sonia O’Sullivan, Kathy Franey, Nnenna Lynch and Cheri Goddard was timed in 17 minutes 18.10 seconds. The record was 17:22.58, set by Villanova in winning the inaugural running of the rarely run race at last year’s meet.

Georgetown won the men’s distance medley relay in 9:31.47, and Arizona State was declared the winner of the women’s 400-meter relay after first-place finisher Illinois was disqualified for an illegal pass. Texas took the women’s 1,600 sprint medley in 3:45.17.

Auburn’s Kelly Carter won the college men’s 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 50.07. In other men’s finals, the winners included C. J. Hunter of Penn State in the shotput at 65 feet 5 inches, Tony Washington of Syracuse in the discus at 185-10, and Alan Turner of Indiana in the long jump at 25-8 3/4.

Latanya Archie of Houston won the women’s long jump at 20-1.
