HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Westlake Edges Newbury Park to Clinch Title

Mike Lieberthal singled home Rick Wolters in the top of the eighth inning Friday to give Westlake High a 4-3 win over Newbury Park and its first outright Marmonte League baseball title.

Westlake (22-1, 10-0 in league play) had only four hits, but Lieberthal had three and knocked in three runs.

In the eighth, Wolters reached first on an error and moved to second on Rob Neal’s base hit before Lieberthal drove in the winning run.

Jason Cash was two for two with a home run and and two runs batted in to lead Newbury Park (5-10-1, 0-7).

In other baseball games:

Hart 10, Burbank 1--Senior left-hander Andrew Lorraine struck out six in four innings, raising his season strikeout total to 98 and his record to 7-0 as first-place Hart (18-1-2, 11-0) coasted in a Foothill League game at Foy Park.

Lorraine scattered three singles and surrendered one run. Hart (18-1-2, 11-0) tagged three pitchers for 13 hits. Senior Lance Migita was two for four with four RBIs.

Alemany 12, Loyola 6--Senior Scott Goldsmith had four hits to lead visiting Alemany (12-10, 4-5) in a Del Rey League game.

Joey Rosselli was three for three with two runs scored and two RBIs and hit a solo home run. He also pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief of freshman right-hander Eddie Bushey (1-0). Rosselli struck out four and allowed one hit for his third save.

Saugus 17, Ridgecrest Burroughs 6--Walter White tied a school record with five hits in five at-bats, including a home run and four RBIs, as first-place Saugus (14-5-1, 10-1) cruised in a Golden League game at Ridgecrest.

J. B. Johnson was two for five, including a home run and two RBIs, and Kyle Lonsberry was four for four with three RBIs.

Antelope Valley 20, Canyon 10--Antelope Valley (10-10, 6-5) collected 18 hits, including seven doubles. Tony Abrams was four for five, including three doubles, and had four RBIs.

Jack Cox was three for three with three RBIs. Jeff Whiteford (two for four) and Jeff Bishop (two for five) each had one RBI.

Rio Mesa 19, Dos Pueblos 10--Jamie Liddell was five for five with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored to lead visiting Rio Mesa (14-5-2, 7-1-2) to a Channel League victory. John McMullen added three hits and three RBIs and scored four runs.

Glendale 15, Muir 1--Junior right-hander Lance Evans (3-1) pitched a three-hitter with three strikeouts in a Pacific League game at Muir.

Brent Overfelt was two for two with four walks to lead a 16-hit attack by Glendale (12-6-2, 6-4-1). Marco Rivas was three for four and Curtis Jung was two for five with three runs.

Agoura 10, Santa Paula 3--Danny Freedman was three for four with two doubles, and Bobby Kazmirski was three for five with two RBIs to lead Agoura (11-8, 6-0) in a Frontier League game at Santa Paula.

Junior right-hander Sean Fitzgerald (2-2) allowed two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings for the victory.

Chaminade 13, Notre Dame 11--Visiting Chaminade built a 10-run lead and then held off a charging Notre Dame team (5-1 in league) that scored 10 runs in the final two innings of a San Fernando Valley League game.

Chaminade (12-8-1, 4-2) won its fourth consecutive game and Ted Corcoran earned his first save. Corcoran was four for four with two RBIs.

Maranatha 2, Montclair Prep 0--Montclair Prep’s offensive woes continued. The visiting Mounties, who have scored only one run in the past 14 innings, stranded eight in an Alpha League game.

Montclair Prep (18-3, 6-1) starter Russell Ortiz (5-1) surrendered a two-out, two-run single in the third inning and struck out six in a complete game. Keyaan Cook was two for three.

Alhambra 8, Burroughs 0--Burroughs managed just four singles against Alhambra’s John Middleton (5-2) in a Foothill League game at Alhambra. Robert Wood absorbed the loss for Burroughs (4-16, 2-9). Alhambra improved to 12-10, 5-6.

La Salle 11, St. Genevieve 5--Mike Rysdon rapped a two-run single in the first inning as host La Salle (12-6, 4-2) jumped to a 4-0 lead and coasted to a San Fernando Valley League win.

Jesus Barraza (4-2) picked up the win, and Chris Miyake pitched the last two innings. Miyake also had two hits and scored three runs.

St. Genevieve fell to 5-10-1, 0-6.

Franklin 19, Verdugo Hills 4--Franklin pounded 16 hits in the Northeastern League game at Verdugo Hills. Pat Eubanks was two for four with an RBI for Verdugo Hills (2-11, 1-4).

Fillmore 3, Moorpark 0--Anthony Chessani (6-1) struck out nine, walked none and allowed just two hits for host Fillmore (13-3, 9-2) in a Tri-Valley League game.

Oak Park 6, Bishop Diego 4--Freshman Damon Sterling was two for three and had the game-winning RBI to lead visiting Oak Park (8-8-1, 5-5-1) in a Tri-Valley League game. Jason Kane, Dan Schaeffer and Art Kahn each had two hits for Oak Park.

Highland Hall 14, Newbridge 0--Tommy Tominaga hit his seventh home run of the season and had five RBIs to lead visiting Highland Hall (18-2, 5-0) to its 29th consecutive league victory.

Oak Hill 30, Einstein Academy 1--Lance Strokolis hit three home runs, including two grand slams in the third inning, and had 11 RBIs to lead Oak Hill (5-3-1, 3-2) in a Westside League game shortened to three innings by mutual agreement.

Paraclete 8, Kern Valley 2--Senior right-hander Tim Salado had 10 strikeouts for Paraclete in a Desert Inyo game. Jason Williams was two for two, including a double and a two-run home run.

SWIMMING

Crespi 90, Loyola 82--Crespi (9-1, 7-0) clinched its first Del Rey League title since 1979. Junior Rusty King swam a leg on Crespi’s winning 200-yard medley relay team, won the 200 freestyle and won the 100 butterfly. Jason Mitchell won the 100 backstroke, and Jean Michel won the 100 breaststroke.

Loyola (6-1), winner of nine consecutive league titles, had never lost in its home pool since it was built in 1980.
